The Bible doesn't say the earth is 6000 years old, that's what misinformed religionists say. The Bible's description makes possible for millions of years for the creation of earth.

Carbon dating not being accurate is an understatement. It can not be used at stating something is over 30,000 years, it doesn't work and I don't mean 100,000+/- it doesn't work I mean as in not at all 0+/-. Did you know they carbon dated a living seal at 6,000 years old and a living snail at 27,000 years old, it also dated lava less than 200 years old at 4.5 million years?!?! To attempt to accurately carbon date something you must have a good idea of a time of death and a good idea of what the levels were at the time of death. Since no one put a tombstone on these little fossils running around and no one set up their Geiger counters at the time of death...it is impossible to figure with ANY degree of accuracy!
The Bible is what is to be believed (not necessarily a preacher) science proves its accuracy time and time again. In addition just because they have a PHD doesn't mean they know what they are talking about or can think for them selves. They can go along with the charade as well as there predecessors. But there are a few PHD's out there that will admit the fact that evolution could not have and did not happen!

Most colleges grant "Honorary degrees" for excellence in a certain field. Colleges do not grant these unless they are earned, but can given out to someone without a diploma. If someone was given a real Doctorate degree from a real college, then yes I would believe them.
As for the 5 billion vs. 6000 years. The Bible is a book of faith that is suppose to convey a message. I believe that message is, "BE GOOD". I don't think the Bible would really care if we thought the Earth was 10 years old as long as we get the message.
In regards to science. It does try really hard to compete with religion. As I said before, religion doesn't need to be right in this situation. Science just wants someone to love it and hug it and tell it everything will be ok. So lets just say the Earth is 5 billion years old. OK? That way everyone is happy.

I am laughing at the finite infinite comment. Nothing finite can be infinite and nothing rubber can be steel and comparing apples and oranges is a typical creationist argument. 1, 2, and 3 are finite numbers, but you can have a collection of numbers that is infinite, you may also have an infinite amount of groups of 3 or 6 or 11, so from where I sit, the argument is, and I'll be kind here, moot. There are religious scholars who claim that if you follow the descriptions in the bible regarding lifespans and amount of time passed, that they can place the age of the universe, not just earth, remember, according to the genesis story, it was all snapped into existence in 7 little old days, at around 6000 years. This indicates a belief so shaky that if this particular disagreement should go against the 6000 year idea, that it would devastate christianity. Wow, how strong must their convictions be?

Why hasn't anyone just come out and stated the obvious? The Bible is a FICTIONALIZATION of the history of the people in a small geographical area of Earth. from 4000 BC to about 100 AD. Some of the people may be real, but a lot of it is made up. There was no Noah's Ark. There was no Garden of Eden. If God exists, why would he create geological evidence that contradicts the Bible?
And I wouldn't believe a preacher or a PhD unless there was some reason for me to believe them. I'd have to verify what they said on my own. Then I would make my own informed decision about what to believe. A PhD doesn't automatically make someone right. And a preacher is usually well-intentioned but misdirected.

I'd look at the facts myself and not let other people influence my decision. If I cant think for myself then I might go for the man with a PHD who keeps getting science mixed up and CONSTANTLY changes a few million years here and there!! What a joke, a few million years, they haven't got a CLUE.
They were not there when the earth was made and every few months make a different story up. Not ONE piece of evidence has been found to prove any missing links, and monkeys are still giving birth to monkeys as far as I can see!
So The Preacher who has studied the word of God gets my approval ,as Jesus tell us that the wise appear wise in their eyes ONLY, yet really they are fools!

First, RC Dating is far from an accurate science and can be manipulated or contaminated purposefully/accidently and the results will be dramatically effected. Secondly, nobody knows exacly how much time elapsed from the beginning of Genesis to the end. Even the most well versed theologians can only speculate. And even if there is only 6000 years to the creation of Adam, the Earth existed long before Adam. Now pre-Adamite existance is widely disagreed upon by many of different faiths and each with their own limited understanding of scripture. But, a race did exist before Adam and is supported in scriptures. Referring to the fall of Lucifer and the world over which he had dominion. This is long preceeding Genesis and the creation of Adam. Nobody knows how much time passed while "the Earth was without form, and void". Also not known is the true amount of time between Adam and Noah. You can try to count the generations noted, but without considering that man lived much longer lives in those days, your generational approach will prove to be inacurrate as well. The specific times are not for us to know except as revealed through God. They are not as important as the facts which they lead to. It doesn't matter "when" it happened, only that it did happen. If you remove what man understands to be time, then the Bible is never proven to be inaccurate. In fact it's just the opposite. Scripture predicts science and as time passes, man's understanding of science proves the scriptures to be accurate. Could this knowledge come from anyone except God himself?

The Bible is more accurate than anything else. And how do you know you're only talking +/- 100,000 years? Besides the Bible does not stipulate the earth is only 6000 years old, the only thing we know is that man has only been on earth approximately 6000 years.

JW, You are right to raise the question. Just a theory that I heard from a religious scientist, but if we view the universe as circular, ever expanding from its center and we are say in the middle outer fringe and the universe is spinning, the speed (remember Einstein's theory of relativity, speed will affect the passage of time) at the outer rim has to be greater to cover all that space, while the center is travelling slower. 6,000 years to the Guy in the center might be 10 billion years to the poor slobs stuck on earth? Like I said, we'll never know, but at least it attempts to reconcile the incontrovertible truths of science with the human need for faith.

I read once of some carbon dating that was done on a live turtles shell. The shell was found to be a million years old or some astronomical number of years old. A living turtles shell.
By the way, the Bible says that God has chosen the foolishness of preaching to save the lost.
