I was a paratrooper in the Army. Airplanes used by paratroopers are designed for that purpose. Commercial Airlines are not. The commercial aircraft would have to have a T tail so that people would not hit one of the control surfaces. Engines would need to be above the wings, not below. Otherwise you would be sucked into the turbine. There are just too many variables that render having parachutes on board a bad idea. I do think that your question is an excellent one.

Um no. Flying is still the safest way to fly. When would you ever need a parachute? Most accidents on planes occur during take off or landing. What good would a parachute be at that point?
The only time planes had accidents in the air is when they were blown up by terrorists. You don't have enough time to put on a parachute once your plane is shot down.
You're an idiot.
Plus, more people would die with a parachute anyways. The altitude that planes fly at would create such a pressure on the body that those using the chutes would die within a few minutes of leaving the plane. Fighter pilots can eject out because one, they don't fly at such altitudes, second, they have an oxygen tank attached to the seat when they eject.
No one would be saved by a parachute since most incidents happen as I said, on take off and landing.

Nope. Too Expensive to buy, too heavy the extra fuel would kill the airline, too bulky they would have to eliminate luggage, and ineffective. It takes months of training to get comfortable using a parachute and can you just see some 75 year old 400 pounder trying to strap on a chute. Commercial aircraft doors are not designed to be opened in flight, and even if the plane was depressurized I wouldn't go out the side door of a 747. Are you going to carry bailout bottles too, or will you evacuate 250 after you get below 10,000 feet. Those issues are just the tip of the iceberg. A night jump over a forest, the list is endless.
I used to have a job where one of my duties was investigating aircraft accidents. It was for the military and the aircraft were fighters. These were young, fit, well trained professionals using ejection seats and even then getting out was in no way a 100% certainty.
Sorry, it's not that it can't be done but it is just so impractical that no one in the industry would ever consider it seriously.

No. This is a BAD idea. Look at it this way, the plane is going down ok, so you go and you get your parachute and decide to jump from the plane. You jump from the plane, slam into the side of the elevator or alieron and are a goner. Huge lawsuit potential here.

Summary of answers:
(a) Impossible: 1) insufficient time to use: as most accidents occur at take-offs and landings, 2) people panic; 3) atmospheric pressure at high altitudes will not permit to survive; 4) aircraft design: position of engines (suction, hitting surfaces danger), door opening design; no ejection seats, lack of fitness
(b) Training to use: 5) long time, 6) complicated and costly
(c) Cost: 7) equipping every commercial aircraft is costly (extra weight, fuel, at expense of luggage)
(d) In-efficient: 8) falling deadly (forest, sea, rocks etc.)
A very nice question that passed by many people's minds. Thanks

no. too long to put on without training. price. who pays attention to the flight attendants when they say their spiel about seatbelts and exits and oxygen masks? after all that..who would have the presence of mind to pay attention and remember how to put on and use the parachute....at that speed, when the cabin looses pressure due to the door opening..a vaccume is created and everything gets sucked out...oops! forgot my 'chute while i was getting nailed in the head by people and chairs and bulkheads and luggage as i was getting sucked out of the plane....does my reckoning satisfy your question as to the lack of parachutes on commercial flights?

Mate, jet planes won't be safer with parachutes. For that to work, you need ejection seats for every single seat!!!

Dont be silly. It would be a bit hard to put on a chute when your already dead.
