Is it normal to maybe put a little present in there, just a small something, and if so, what?

If you have any additional penpal normal etiquette, please share it with me!

Thanks!

Put in something that is local to your hometown or city! You know, like every country in the world has something unique to their country. People (foreigners) want to see what is unique to your area instead of seeing the usual in their own area!

Have fun

hmm.. presents? i don't really think it's that appropriate, unless you have known this pen pal or yours for years, if so, perhaps you can meet up somewhere and give each other treats of any kind.. but for now a simple letter will do; other than asking about one's interests, hobbies, ambition, etc, you can spice up the conversation by adding in salutations in the german language.. learn some simple salutations and ask him/her whether if it's correctly used... having a german dictionary nearby would make it easier.. i know just couple of them:

ich liebe dich = i love you
danke jung = thank you

pls correct me if i'm wrong... Good Luck!

You don't need to send a gift, but it can be nice to send one anyway, for example something small that is typical for where you're from. I don't think people generally expect a pen friend to send a gift, but they're happy to get one if they do, so if you want to send a small gift go ahead. It will be a nice little surprise for your pen pal.

Sending photos is cool too.

You don't need to send a gift, but if your pen pal collects something it would be nice to send an item to add to their collection. For example, if they collect stamps, send some U.S. stamps. If they collect coins, send some of our cool states quarters. If you really wanted to send gift, say for your pen pal's birthday you could send a pair of Levi's as they are very popular overseas. A CD of your favorite music group would also be a very nice thing to share with your pal.

I have friends in Germany who I speak with because I once lived there. She used to love American candy and other products you dont find there. Try not to use figures of speach if they arent fluent and keep sarcasm low. Thats about it!

In my travels and letters I always sent post cards and such, also if there is a major news story, send them a clipping from the newspaper so they can see the difference btwn the way our media reported it and theirs did.

Don't send them CDs and such before you ask them about Customs charges and such

Describe your place, your pets, your guardians, your brothers and sisters. it is easier to get solid communication going once you have an thought approximately somebody and how they stay. For crying out loud, do no longer initiate moaning approximately how crap your life is, how rotten your friends are or how plenty you detest college/artwork. no one likes a whinger!

Something "simply (wherever you come from)," meaning something you can only get where you live. For example, if you lived in Japan, you could stick a lucky cat figurine in.

I'd say photos...

@whodare...

danke jung = thank you young (nonsense)
danke = thank you
dankeschön = thank you (with connotation of being positively surprised/happy)
