Are you sure you mean sense? My daddy told me I needed common sense, so I saved all my pennies, but the lady at the store just laughed at me. I was only a little girl when that happened. I was so hurt. Oh, by the way, common sense is not common it has to be taught, just like someone needs to teach you that a penny is worth one cent.

A penny (pl. pence or pennies) is a unit of currency or a coin used in several English-speaking countries.
A coin is usually a piece of hard material, generally metal and usually in the shape of a disc, which is issued by a government to be used as a form of money. Along with banknotes, coins make up the cash forms of all modern money systems. Coins are usually used for lower-valued units, and banknotes are usually used for the higher values; also, in most money systems, the highest value coin is worth less than the lowest-value note.

Bill explained it perfectly. A cent is 1% of a dollar and a penny is 1/240 of a troy ounce of sterling silver.

not quite sure if you're looking for the origin of the words & why they're related or if you want what a penny is to cents.
penny comes from Old Norse (penningr), while cent comes from Latin (centum)
