To those who said it would have no effect, wrong. Completely Wrong.
Depending on the years of JROTC you've completed, you will rise in rank. I was in JROTC two years (graduated early, couldn't do my third year).
Basically,
2 years = E2
3 years = E3
When they get your transcripts from HS, it will tell them how many years. It doesn't matter how long you've waited to join the military, you'll still get that E2 or E3.
In any case, I wish you luck in the military :)

Your rank is based upon the length of time you are in JROTC, the grades you received, the extent of your involvement, and the rank you held. In other words, if you simply went to JROTC class for a year, made Cs and never volunteered for any of JROTC other programs then your chances of getting a rank boost are much less than if you were on one of the Guards, stayed in for 3 years and made good grades with a high rank. Keep in mind that while you can get a rank boost to E-3, you will be stuck in that rank for 2 years until you meet the time in service requirement to make E-4. I would still look into it. A lot will also depend on what you have been doing since 2002. The main reason for getting the boost in rank is that you are supposed to already have the discipline and partial training the Army wants including PT scores from JROTC. If you appear as though you have forgotten everything and can't pass your first PT test, that can affect things as well.
To make E-2 you need 1 to 2 years of JROTC. You need 3 years JROTC to make E-3.

As far as I know, JROTC courses taken during high school will not give you an automatic boost to E-3 after you complete basic training and time-in-grade requirements.
However, SROTC taken during college *may* help you out, since you would have some college under your belt and become eligible for that 'boost' as you call it.
You had better check with the recruiter again and see that regulation in writing (have him show it to you) before signing your contract.
This may have changed since the mid-1990s when I was in.
Back then they were letting people out of their contracts left and right. Now they cannot recruit enough folks to sign up, and the ones who are under contract are sometimes unable to break them or the contract gets involuntarily extended due to 'needs of the service.' In some cases, retirees with certain skill sets are actually being recalled back to active duty service.
And there is no such thing as E-0; the lowest enlisted rank is E-1.

Dude just do it!! You'll be just fine you get a feel of what the service is like. Life is full of "potheads". You just have to deal with it. Everyone on this page is right, you automatically get E-3 for all service other than USMC. JROTC pays off for just 2 or 3 years if your enlisting top it off, of your very good at this program you can probably acquire a recommendation letter from your SMI and/or MI to go to an military academy if you plan to go to college.

You don't have to join hte military. If you do you will not have a rank. JROTC will not get you a thing in the military. Just some very basic trainning. You will have to earn your rank in the military starting E0 in basic then moving up to E1.....

Actually, the advantages of early attainment of a higher rank, like immediately being an E-3, puts you three pay grades higher than all the other recruits, who have to wait a while to attain rank!
Your entire career, you will be two ranks above your peers!
Important? Hell, Yes!!! Even your retirement, for the rest of your life, will benefit financially!!!

I thnk you do get a boost to e-3, just like for a few college hours, recruiting friends, or a million other things. Takes less than a year, and you don't make e-4 any faster than you would normally. It's just a few hundered extra dollars for the year, nop big deal, it's a recruiting ploy.

I'm in AFJROTC right now and it doesn't effect you rank it looks good to the military and stuff but has no effect. If you go to an Academy then you go in as an officer.
