Lately I have been having very odd dreams that are completely confusing me to the point I don't even want to go to sleep.

In all of them I am in a very boring atmosphere, such as a desert or the woods, and I am looking for something urgently. But the whole time I, as the character in my dream, am bored. Just plain "waiting for 8 hours in line" bored.

Any possible ideas on what this can mean?

According to my trusty "Dictionary of Dreams" book, it says that dreams about waiting can mean a couple of things.

1. You feel unfairly held back and wish you could remove obstacles that are holding you back.

2. It could be drawing attention to the importance of having patience and accepting a slower approach to achieving your goals.

Let me analyze your dreams.

Boring atmosphere = inactive social life
Looking for something urgently = need to be noticed

There are not much details you are giving exactly about your dreams. However, I think you are looking for an active social life and yet all you see are woods and desert. . Perhaps in your dream, you are searching for something that will get you away from that boredom which means in reality you want to have that as well

I could be wrong, but more detail in your dream will give better explanation

Dunno. Is it possible that you are being "forced" to stand around in God's creation and think that it is boring, until you come to understand the point--which is that creation is all there is, and you're a part of it, and so you need to start looking around at what IS here instead of looking for something that isn't...or for something elsewhere?

What is exciting? Like, a hoppin' club where everyone is on X? Or 5th Avenue at Christmas? Or sitting in front of the tube while playing Xbox?

It might be time to reevaluate the earth that you're a part of (literally), which bores you. It might be time to reevaluate artificiality, which doesn't.

Who knows? It just sort of kills me when people say that the woods is a boring place to be. Obviously they're not paying attention.

"Searching" mean that the dreamer is in need of find something that is missing from their life.
"Desert" often represents the unconscious, particularly the shadow self. Also, It can be a straight forward symbol for a sense of barrenness, poverty, lack, exhaustion, loneliness, or even death.
My guess would be that you are currently stuck in a job or relationship that is more draining than beneficial. This job is probably one where you are working alone most of the time, as well as with a relationship. You are bored to the point of just putting in your time and can see no way out of your current predicament.

Dreams, and reoccurring dreams in particular, are our brain's way of processing, and in some cases alerting us to various emotional things that happen in our waking lives.

So you are having this dream, over and over again, because there is some situation in your life that you are not addressing, or perhaps even aware of.

The trick to interpreting the dreams, is to think about the way you feel when you are having the dream, and then figure out when during your waking life you experience the same emotion.

feelings of boredom in a dream are unusual- dreams are usually scarey, exhilerating, exciting, just so we remember the messages they send.
But Boredom? Do you mean that the dream is boring or that you feel bored in the dream?

Searching in the 'dead' places you describe means that you are reasonably content with your life and maybe need to inject a little excitement and challenge into it.
