Who would support the idea of our own foriegn legion? If you are willing to come to America, serve in our military. (say 6 years maybe.) And are discharged honorably, you would be allowed to remain as a citizen. Plus you would enjoy the benefits of military service. G.I. bill, VA home purchasing, etc.

It would be a good idea, the American Military might get some soldiers who can fight without having to have better technology and your casualty rate might drop.

Yes & no. Right now, if you get a green card (perm resident alien) you can serve in the military & generally are granted citizenship during your first four year contract (or cannot reenlist). I've known many guys in the military who were not born in the US.

Yes I would support allowing people to go to US consulates in their home countries & apply to join the US military. This would require a thurough background check, academic & language skills test, physical including extensive disease tests & shots. IF clean on all that, then would be gratned a visa to enter the US for recruitment. Upon satisfactorily completing Basic & specialty training would be granted green card & upon fulfilling six years service OR a one-year combat tour would be granted full citizenship. The number of enlistments in this category would be strictly limited as well as the jobs available to them (security) though they may be allowed to change jobs upon reenlisting.

Finally, I'd not that the concept of seperate fighting force of non-citizens like the French Foriegn Legion is a BAD idea. You see France today is willing to send the legion to die anywhere & everywhere & does so constantly, that's why they were created. However, they are scared out of their mind to risk native born troops. Because they are able to apply a small degree of military force with the legion & don't need their native troops unless something big comes along, they are gun shy as hell. I would not support creating seperate units of non-citizens as I do not want the US to turn into a French style wuss country. I do however welcome others willing to become americans and earn their citizenship more than the ones we're currently granting citizenship to.

I believe anyone that has a desire to become a citizen should be given opportunity to serve. But if you are talking about a situation much like the French Foreign Legion... you have to remember that a great deal of there membership are in the legion in order to prevent them from being jailed. Now, certainly, it isn't a majority.

And as for the mortality rate...? well, you need to look at history and facts. Right now we have a far lower mortality rate than any previous war ... mainly due to technology... and it is considered more dangerous to live in a large metropolitan city these days than to be in Iraq.

i would join
But it sounds more like Doing time rather than Serving, don't you think? If someone would be killed in action for US, would you bury him on US soil with honor? Or you'll leave him lying somewhere in desert?

Me again. US already created theyr own "Foreign Legion" in Afghanistan back in 80's, i don't think they would do same mistake again, do they? Last thing US needs now is another generation of trained guerrillas legally traveling through US or around the world under American flag. Network of (home made) sleepers, who's waiting to pull the trigger. Notice, back then they (Arabs/terrorists) all were welcome to live in US or UK.

Me as a foreigner would like to join the privilege to serve but you WON'T find out there any other IDIOT LIKE ME who's willing to do that without having naughty thoughts...

That is not a bad idea. Just need to ensure we do not get the criminals and losers from other countries. I would also ensure that American soldiers and marines are in leadership positions. I am not sure if that is how the French Foreign Legion works or not
