You should not pay any money at all for linux distros, that is the whole point of open-source.

I'm using Windows 98, 2k, XP sp2, Debian and Free BSD.

The Win 98 machine is for old-school gaming, the 2K for work, and the XP machine for more modern gaming. On the 98 machine I'm also dual booting it with Debian to get a feel for Linux and the Free BSD is to learn BSD. I would suggest saving your money and getting one of the free linux distros so you can try it out before you make the decision to buy (if that choice even comes). Better yet, you could get Knoppix from the link below and not have to repartition or reformat your machine.

Knoppix usually requires a few steps to get it running.
1. Download the file.
2. Burn the ISO image to a cd.
3. Reboot your computer with the cd inside the drive. (Assuming your BIOS settings allow you to boot from the cdrom drive first)
4. Either press enter at the bootup screen or select your own options and you're ready to use Knoppix.

In choosing a distro you could list what you don't like about Windows XP and find a distro that best addresses your concerns. I would suggest going to distrowatch or wikipedia to research your options.

You should download SP2 from the Windows Update site on to your computer and see if that helps your problems. Be prepared to learn a new system I tried Linspire and didn't like it. I have Windows XP Media Center Edition and I love it, it does everything.

umm you should'nt have to pay anything for ANY linux distribution. Linux is freeware. I have a dual boot system with XP and Fedora Core 5. I use Linux most of the time but due to alot of software conflicts i also have XP installed to alleviate that problem. www.xandros.com - they will show you where you can get the download for free
