i live in la and i'm looking for a beach that won't be horribly crowed at the beginning of august. The city doesn't nessasarily be quiet or small, but just a nice place to relax. within 4 hours of la.

If you are looking to just visit, the beaches further south of LA like Hermosa is quiet. If you stay in the more popular beaches like Venice, Santa Monica, Malibu, of course you'll get the crowds.

In Orange County its quiet pass Newport.. so hang around the Laguna area, all the way to San Clemente. Huntington Beach is the most populated but there's a lot more to do there.

Hope that helps a bit.

What about going north of Santa Barbra to Goleta, watch out for oil globs from the off shore drills, or continue to the North to Pismo Beach....you used to be able to drive right onto the beach in Pismo Beach and camp...don't know if you still can. Pismo Beach is a beautiful area.

But if you have a little more time head to Northern California for some amazing beaches....
Head north to either the Big Sur or Little Sur areas with some absolutely wonderful secluded beaches, camping tents and cabins available as well as hotels. It will take you more than 4 hours but it's well worth it. Continue on north to Monterrey to Monastery Beach and the Carmel Beach..right at the end of the strip of downtown in Carmel...then go further north to Santa Cruz...some of the greatest beaches in northern California are in Santa Cruz. For views of amazing elephant seals and tide pools go north of Santa Cruz and see beaches along the way to Half Moon Bay. Well worth the trip.

If you have lots of time to travel go north of Sausalito to Muir Wood and to the coast...go see Bodega Bay where "The Birds" by Alfred Hitchcock was filmed...lots of fog, atmosphere, and beautiful Pacific to see. Continue to Fort Bragg....great sand dunes and wonderful bay with lots of seafood restaurants. Enjoy!
