Tailless cats originated as a mutation many years ago. There is some debate whether they originated on the Isle of Man or were ship cats that were deposited on the island by ships which were docked there.
In any event, not all Manx cats are completely tailless. They can have tails just like any other cat. However good show cats must be completely and naturally tailless. Breeders of purebred Manx often dock the tail of their tailed, non-show type kittens because persons who want a Manx kitten expect a cat with no tail. Actually, tails in litters of purebred Manx kittens are quite common.
Another breed of semi-tailless cat is the Japanese Bobtail which originated in Japan. Show cats have a short tail but I'm not sure how long it's allowed to be for the shows.

The Manx is a result of dominant gene mutation, there are different varieties of Manx. They were named for the feline inhabitants from the Island of Man(located in the British Isles) Fabled to have been originated from cats abandoned from Pirate ships, because there were too many cats on the ships. They kept down the vermin population, and also served as companions. Also, see: Ernest Hemmingway.

The Manx cat is related to wild cats more than other cats. It has no tail because lots of wild cats have no tail, for example; bobcats.

Manx are not a natural breed. They are cross breeds, like dachsunds or Bull Mastiffs. That is why they have bowel and spine problems. Dont mess with what God made. His creation is 'GOOD'.
