salaam is almost the same in Arabic as shalom in Hebrew. It comes from the Arabic root "salima" which means more or less to be safe, sound, secure, or well, and the word salaam by itself means safety, peace, and well-being. Muslim and often non-Muslim Arabs will say, both as in greeting and departure, "as salaamu aleikum"(peace be upon you) which is answered with "wa aleikum as salaam"(and upon you peace). In isolated cases you may hear the word salaam used by itself as a salutation, but "ahlan" is far more common. Salaam is also used in other context like "ya salaam!" just like "ya Allah!"(Oh [my] God!)."Ya salaam!" is usually a response to a good surprise, but can also express dismay. Also when an Arab returns from a long trip, he/she is greeted with "Alhamdu lisalaamak!"(praise[God] for your safety!).

I am a Muslim .
When muslims greet each other they say ASSALAM_0_ALAIKUM
SALAM is just Hi , hello .
ASSALAM_0_ALAIKUM means May PEACE BE UPON YOU !
IN its reply we Say WAALAIKUM_US_SALAM , May peace be upon you too !
Their pronunciation is specific , any change would cause change in meaning.
Regards,
Sidra
