Depends on what kind of a plan you're following. If your going low-fat, then cheese is pretty high-fat, but stick to the lower fat varieties like mozzarella.

If you're doing low-carb, it's recommended that you stick to a maximum of 4 oz per day, since it does have a fair number of carbs (but better than most dairy foods). If you're low-carbing, go for the full-fat cheese.

Either way, it's okay in moderation, but make sure it's REAL cheese, not "processed cheese food" (full of sugar and chemicals).

The best rule of thumb is if cheese is in the name of the food you're eating (chili cheese frys) it's probably too much, but if cheese is just a topping (say, a turkey sandwich) then it's probably just fine.
Just be sure your eating "real" cheese and not some sort of orange gooey abomination unto your body (like nachos from a movie theater or "cheese-wiz").
And last of all STOP BEING ON A DIET! Make permanant changes and stick with them 'till death (and if you do it'll probably be long wait).

Here is what you need to do, if you are serious about losing weight and keeping it off. Eat 6 small meals a day about every 4 hours. Here what that will do for you, your metabolism will increase (i.e. Loose weight) and you will have more engry. If you go on a diet and eat less, your metabolism will slow down and store to fat. That is why diets dont work. Only the size of your fist, carbs (examples:baked potato, pasta, oatmeal, beans, corn, melon, apples, fat free yogurt, whole wheat breads)in one and protien (examples:chicken breast, swordfish, shrimp, turkey breast) in the other. You can also eat vegetables and salads with any meal, they dont have none or little fat). 30min cardo exercise every day. Any of these(examples: walking, jogging, swimming, running, biking, ect), Monday cardo, tues upper body (arms: curls, tricep extensions, pull ups, front press)(abdominals: leg pull crunch, leg raises), (chest: bench press, butterfly, pullover)(shoulders: front press, arm pullover, cross county skier machine)(back:seated row, lat pull downs, back extension)(YOU DONT HAVE TO DO IN ONE DAY, mix it up) wed cardo, thurs lower body (legs: leg pull, leg press, squats, lounges) fri cardo, sat upper. Sunday eat anything you want and dont exercising, you do this on sunday so your body doesnt go into starvation mode. YOU NEED TO TAKE SUNDAY OFF. If you stilck with this you will have a great body. also drink aleast 8oz of water daily! Stay away from Mcdonals, Wendys, ect because there is nothing good for you on the menu's even the salads are bad (beaon bits, cheeze, dressing, ect) Good Luck :)

The lighter color the cheese is, the less fat. I'd stay away from the orange American Cheese. Mozzeralla, Swiss, Jack cheeses are all light colored and less fat. Eating them cold in sandwiches is best, fried is worst. Moderation is also good for dieting.

Cheese once in a while is alright, but in general cheese is pretty fattening (its like 5g/slice) ... Try reduced fat cheese if you want some here and there (its like half the fat). Good luck with ur diet:)

Only if it is fat free. It s also high in sodium which makes you retain water. Fat free cottage cheese and fat free Cheddar would be OK in moderation I would think.
