The coffee is bitter, when I want coffee, I just want coffee...not a double soy vanilla latte with two sugars blah blah blah. Not only that, but I think people carry around their damn Starbucks cups like some sort of status symbol. I used to have co-workers carry in their Starbucks coffee cups like they were carrying a freaking LV purse. And when I'd walk in with my 99 cent coffee, they would scoff at me and say "Oh, how could you drink such garbage...?"
Not only did they purchase Seattle's Best Coffee...but they are monopolizing the independent coffee shop owners (and their coffee is always better and less costly....and not greenish and acidy) Who hates Starbucks?

I don't understand the problem... I love Starbucks. Like I hop in my Benz and like blow past all those struggling privately owned coffee shops that have MUCH better coffee on my way to Abercrombie& fitch so I can like spend an obsene amount of money like for the priviledge of carrying their totally cool bag around the mall. What better way to end a day of wasting my money than to get a double triple caffe latte double ground organic $10.00 cup of coffee? So I can't pay my bills and like, I have NO money when I get my paycheck, but it is SOOO totally worth everyone thinking that I am like the coolest girl like, EVER! Besides, like, my dad will totally give me more money anyways!
( For those who have the inability to detect massive sarcasim, I hate Starbucks too)

I agree with you, the coffee is bitter. I would rather get a cup from Macdonalds than go to Starbucks. If you want really good coffee go to 7 eleven or Dunkin Donuts, even better I make my own coffee in the morning and take it to work with me, I save quite a bit of money that way. I use Jose's Vanilla Nut which I purchase at Costco, it comes whole bean but you can have it ground on the way out of the store.

I myself prefer sweeter coffee drinks like lattes, but that is the only thing I like about starbucks. It is way too expensive for coffee, when I could just go to quick trip on my way to school or work to have a nice and cheap coffee. All I need is creamer and sugar and I'm happy. I don't need the "rich man's coffee" lol. I think it just has to do with advertising. There are so many photos of celebs drinking starbucks because they have the money to waste it on. That is why so many people want to drink it. It makes them feel special. Then they have to brag about it to everyone else that they can afford starbucks. Its just a "fad" that is lasting a long time. just like when a better more expensive coffee shops come along...everyone will go there. My favorite coffee shop is close, cheap, friendly, and barely anyone goes there so there are never lines and it is never crowded and loud

Starbucks did not monopolize the coffee industry, they created it. When Starbucks emerged, coffee shops like we have today did not exist. The coffee shops that did exist only sold roasted coffee beans and occasionally brewed coffee. Coffee shops were not places where you chose from a variety of drinks and sit on a couch chatting with your friends. They just sold coffee beans. You think you are saving money by buying cheap coffee, but think about how that money goes nowhere but that shop. Starbucks pays well above the fair trade price for all of their coffee. In 2004 they paid %75 above market value price so farmers could make a decent living. They also build schools, farms, homes and hospitals for the farmers. Local coffee shops are in this to make a profit for themselves. Even if they pay the fair trade price they don't compare. Do some research and don't be ignorant.

I don't like the taste of their coffee and it really chaps my hide when they move in close to a family owned shop knowing the sheep will stampede and put the small place out of business. I think the billions they are making are enough without hurting individuals. I will most likely never be rich because I can't put money before people. I agree that most of these small shops have better and less expensive products.

They monopolize other coffee shops. Seattles best is even better because of its good service and fantastic coffee choices.

i must say that their blackberry green tea frap is like an orgasm in a cup.
but i absolutely agree with the "status symbol" statement.
very true. i always chuckle to myself when i notice that.
and i in no way think starbucks is better than ..say... 711 coffee.
just higher priced...
but when im tired or feeling lazy...the drive thru sbucks is rather appealing.
