Personal belief (and I am not asking anyone else to believe it)
If you think that doing something is wrong, but you do it anyway, that's a sin.
If you think that breaking one of the 10 commandments is a wrong, but you do it, you have sinned.
If you think that computers are the work of the devil, and that using them is evil, but you do it anyway, you have sinned.

When the bible was first written, it describes the "Law of Moses". This set of rules was to prepare the followers for the fuller law which they would receive later, when The Savior came to the Earth. Now there are many changes from the Mosaic Law which have been fulfilled and replaced with the new law.
For example, in the past, animal sacrifices were made, in similitude of the sacrifice The Savior would make. Nowadays, the sacrifice we make is to sacrifice our will for that of The Lord.
Some rules, like pork, have been done away with. Others are important principals which will always go on.
Some of those rules might sound wierd, but often there is a reason for those rules. Remember, back then, food wasn't cooked as well as today, and some pork could have parasites in it (special to pork). Also, personal hygiene was quite poor, ie waiting 7 days after the cycle, etc.

NO there are many sins besides the ten commandments...those are just the ten that God pointed out...but no sin is greater than another so if i murder someone thats just as bad as telling a lie...there are no degrees of sin....and the pork thing in that aspect u cant really take the bible literally but yes it is real and everything but jus in certain aspects......but yea

Sin can be used as a verb, as in you just sinned against someone by doing such and such. It can also be used as a noun where one is in a state of sin.
Actually, the bible tells us that all men and women have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. All people are in a state of sin. Put it this way, if you murder someone, you have broken the law and are guilty. You are in a state of guilt, until you are pardoned by the law of the land, then you are free from guilt. So it does not matter if you sinned once or twice or many times. All people are in a state where they have sinned against God.
What is the solution? Like someone who has committed murder, the way to get out of the state of sin is to be pardoned. But pardoning someone for murder without good reason would be a grave injustice. No someone has to pay for the wrong done. The Christian believes that Jesus died on our behalf to pay the pardon for our sins. When we believe and accept his sacrifice for us, we are free from our state of sin and become a new creation.
Do you sin after you are a new creation? Yes sometimes you do. But the difference is that you are not in a state of sin. You are in a state of righteousness. Yes you do sin but we are told that when we confess our sins, God is righteous and just and will cleanse us from our sins.

There are other specific commands in the New Testament (for instance) than just the 10 commandments...
The 10 commandments are like a summary of the major commandments in the Bible.
Jesus' top 2 commands are (1) love God above everything else and with everything you are, and (2) love your neighbor as yourself... are a summary of the 10 commandments.
Anything we do (which we shouldnt do), or dont do (which we should do) that violates the two commandments above is sin.
Cordially,
John

The 10 commandments basically cover everything if u really think about it. Anything u do wrong is a sin especially if said in the Bible, thats why i repent everytime i get a chance.

I was taught that the best way to think about sin is by using an example from archery, of all things.
Leading a sinless life is like hitting the bullseye EVERY SINGLE TIME you shoot an arrow at a target - no misses, ever. Of course, even the best archers in the world cannot achieve this level of perfection - we all, at times, miss the mark.
That's what sin is: missing the mark, falling short in our objective to lead blameless lives. EVERYBODY misses the mark and commits sin - no one can follow the Jewish Law to the letter, no one is blameless. That's the point - all of us require the grace of God to make up for our shortcomings.

I believe breaking one of the Ten Commandments is called a mortal sin. The others you can "do time" for. Not that I believe in such B.S.

The Ten Commandments are the basics, the blue prints.
They are the first written document of law, morality and order for the human race.
