I have a feeling this is a first time litter for you dear. Well just to give you a few facts that could help. First off a dog carries a litter for 60 to 62 days on average. A little sooner or later if it is a first time, but generally 60 to 62 is the average. You need to start counting the days from the last day the dog mated. A dog is in full heat for 3 weeks but will only breed for about seven days durring that time. When the female becomes fully impregnated her body will trigger and she will no longer accept the male. That is the day you start counting from. Her milk will come in anywhere from one week to just the day before delivery. In most cases the mother will have plenty of milk for the puppies. I do keep a supliment on hand that I get from the feed store called multi-momma just in case we have a really large litter over 10 puppies. I give momma the supliment on her food dry for the last 3 weeks of her pregnancy to insure that the pups get adequate nutrition and momma doesn't get to stress trying to provide the nutrition the babies need. Give momma puppy food or high protein food at the same time as the supliment and all through nursing of the puppies. When it is time to get the puppies started on food, give them a good puppy food again from a feed store or vets office, What I do is grind it up at first in the blender and mix it with the multi-momma (as directed on the can for mixing ratio for puppies) and watch the fun begin. now make sure the food is good and moist. If not it gets very dry and hard to swallow. Within a week of feeding the wet food you can start introducing a little bit dryer food and little bit bigger pieces until in about 2 weeks the pups are eating hard food. Do not feed any dry or mush food until the pups have cut some teath about two to 3 weeks of age. Remember to feed momma away from the pups so she doesn't try to eat their food and also that she doesn't get snappy with them over her food. I know all you wanted was info about milk coming in and here I go rambling. I just wanted to pass on some info I thought you could use. I breed Great Danes and have a lot of exsperience from birthing to bottle feeding. So if you have any questions email me and I will get back with you as soon as I can.

Bitches don't "let down" their milk until they are giving birth or sometimes depending on the bit*ch right before. Make sure she has milk when she has the puppies or else the vet can give a shot that makes her milk come down. It's the same hormone that stimulates her to have contractions.

milk will come during labor, when 1st baby arrives, make sure its all cleaned up get it on a teat and if milk has not started yet this will help the process.......and if after all pups come and no milk, get some goat milk and a little bottle or eye dropper and give them a bit of dinner

Mammals do not make milk until the hormones released in delivery trigger the milk production.

And as a pregnant mammal my self I'm sure she would appreciate it if you would leave her nipples alone, I'm sure they are uncomfortable enough.
