I would definitely spend at least as much time in the San Diego area as I did in LA. The difference in atmosphere in San Diego especially is amazing. It's a major city (7th largest in the US last I heard) but it feels like a resort, even in the downtown business district. People seem much more relaxed and comfortable with themselves than the people in LA and OC. It's easier to drive around than LA, if you're not used to the freeways, and of course it just takes a few minutes to get to Mexico, if you feel like popping into another country for lunch.
Orange County beach areas are also nice. What I like about them is how different each town is even if they're just 5-10 minutes apart on the Pacific Coast Highway. Huntington Beach is famous for surfing and surfer fashion. Newport Beach is nicknamed "NewPorsche Beach", for it's new money population. They like to keep their windows unobstructed, so you can walk along the boardwalk and take a good long look at the inside of your dream house. Laguna is great because you can park your car (well, that's the hardest part) and have beach, cliffs, parks, galleries, and good restaurants all within strolling distance. Dana Point has a harbor with whale-watching tours, gorgeous parks, and the Ritz-Carlton where you can have a meal or drink while enjoying an amazing view. It's expensive and the service is slow, but the view is like nothing else I've ever seen. San Juan Capistrano has a classic mission to tour plus a town full of antique and souvenir shops. San Clemente offers a quaint downtown as well as a beach area with a mediterranean feel.
I've really gone off on a tangent, haven't I? That's what happens when you're supposed to be working but have more fun answering questions. I'm lucky enough to live fairly close to all the places I've described, but I really need to get to work and make enough to live in one of those beach houses...

Two weeks is a long time!!
You're already in the OC, so visit Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, the oldest theme park in the west, and just 10 minutes from you is Balboa and Newport Beach.... home of "The OC" from the TV show.
And since its summertime I could catch a baseball game with the Angels. The stadium is about 20 minutes... take the 55 north to the 5 north and exit Gene Autry Way.
The city 20 minutes north of you is Huntington Beach-- home of "surf city" where you can see the pro beach volleyball and the surf contests.
Half hour south of Orange County is Carlsbad which has outlet shopping, LegoLand (for kids really), and half hour south of that is San Diego and then Mexico.
Go 1 hour north and check out Universal Studios, and the City Walk. I'd even try being in the audience in a TV or Game show by checking the "audiences unlimited" booth.
Then I got to do the most touristy thing...
The Chinese Theater in Hollywood Blvd with the famous hand prints, and or if in town for a movie premiere, checking out the celebrities walking down the red carpet.
Not too far from Hollywood Blvd, I'd see the expensive shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills or the famous Farmer's Market near the CBS studios off Fairfax.
I like Comedy so I'd check out one of the many comedy clubs on the Sunset Strip. For a laugh, I'd check out the Hustler store and stay for a cup of coffee.
There's some of the "must see" that I would do if I had 2 weeks

Take advantage of the things that are uniquely Los Angeles. Warner Bros. Studio Tour - not like the Universal Studios tour this is a tour showing actual studio activity. Try to get tickets to the Tonight Show with Jay Leno or some sitcoms that have live audiences. Hang out at the Sunset Strip at night and chances are you will run into rock or movie stars partying. A day tour, or maybe a couple of days if you have time, to Catalina Island. Catalina Island is pretty unique. Retains the Southern California atmosphere of years past. Very well preserved, no automobiles and nice nature scenery and great places to hang out at night.

hear, chum.. attempting to foretell southern california climate is like attempting to foretell which goodies have a cream filling and which have caramel. you purely by no skill somewhat recognize. there are circumstances in spring the position that is FREEZING in the destiny, and each and each week later, you're splashing round in an 80 degree pool. i have lived interior the Burbank section (l. a. county) quite a lot all of my life, and if there is one project i have discovered, that is keep your iciness dresser and summer season dresser interior the closet all 3 hundred and sixty 5 days lengthy. you purely don't recognize that you need to properly be wanting. i'd advise taking the longer vacation, in case you are able to. we are nevertheless able to swim in our pool for the time of September, and a number of October. that is always a minimum of interior the mid to extreme 1970s, if not larger. The beaches indexed lower than are thrilling anytime of the three hundred and sixty 5 days and, have self belief it or not, they're visited all 3 hundred and sixty 5 days round. one million week isn't a large style of time, even for DL, yet 2 weeks sounds heavenly. Disneyland is between the coolest places on earth, in case you question me, and that i'm in my 20's, hehe. in basic terms you need to carry alongside cooler outfits as well as hotter outfits. no count how warm it really is in the course of the day, it frequently receives breezy at nighttime. i imagine Anaheim has a tendency to be slightly cooler than l. a. yet i have self belief that is nevertheless similar. That one month (August-September) will not make a distinction in words of climate, so bypass for the longer one in case you are able to. have thrilling!
