I am 26 years old with an 8 yr old and another one on the way. I decided on a cosmetology career because you have so many options to choose from. You have your hair that you can do. or you can choose just to do manicures, pedicures and facials plus eyebrow waxing. Or you can be an skin care consultant. Then there is massage relaxation also that you can do. (not massage therapy)
I think there is a lot of flexibility in this field of work. Especially if you work for yourself. I am very happy with this career. But of course there are downsides ( you need to build a clientel) So that means that if you know a lot of people that is good but if not then you have to work at a chain salon to build clientel.
Hope this helps~

it is a nice career, but heed my words of advice. I was a beauty therapist for 4 years and loved it,I enjoyed working for myself and in salons. However, I had a bad accident and broke my arm which means I cannot work as a therapist anymore. I was then stuck in a position where I have no qualifications to do anything other than be a beauty therapist and have to work full time so cannot afford to re-train as anything else, I am stuck being a receptionist and I hate it, it is not the career I want to do but cannot do anything else. Have a back up plan, learn all your office skills as well and you will have another career option if the therapy fails for any reason. Also, lots of therapists get repetitive strain injury and have to give up their careers because of that. I wish with all my heart I had not chosen that career, but something that was a little more flexible so that I am not stuck on a reception desk my whole life.

If u have the hands to whip up hair , then go for it. People will always want to look good. But after cosm school I would get me a few heads I do on the down low, like in my home. I would see how word of mouth goes b4 I went bankrupt. U need to make sure your credit is straight b4 u even think about opening a salon because U will NEED LOANS. Good Luck, and keep your HEAD up!!!!!!!!!!! This is a site that tells u all about start up, It is for Canada ,but it should not make a huge difference if u r n the USA

no, women do not have their hair at a high priority these days. it's Important, but never so important to spend a wad of cash on. Your best bet is to run a clientele out of your home. Cheaper haircuts, they each tell their friends and their friends come. You won't have to pay land taxes on a building or employee wages or worry about having too many full time employees (if you have more than 6, you may have to offer health insurance by law) and over-time pay....honestly...run it from home, then you don't have to claim for taxes! Want an honest career? Get into the medical field...don't like cooties? try an office position.

hi i don't know how the competition is over there in Tennessee
put if you like it you should try it, have you save some money for while you put your salon and is somebody will help with this career
if you don't have money maybe you could work a park time job and try to same some money so you could follow your dream,
over there in California, it is a kind of good career of course there is going to be good days and bad days.
maybe at the school a good counselor you direct you a good path
good luck and hope that your dream come true

you would have better luck starting out working in a salon with others for starters, it would take thousands of dollars just to open up shop and you dont know how well it will go over. Working for an established place you have more chance to make a profit.
