Corollas get 30 city, 38 highway on an automatic, 32/41 with manual. Honda Civic gets 30/38 manual, 30/40 automatic. So progress has been made. Even more if you get a hybrid. Really, 25 mpg isn't all that great these days, unless you're driving an SUV, but even then Toyota's RAV4 gets up to 30 mpg highway, and the Toyota Highlander 27-28.

New cars have such advanced features such as ON STAR. On star can detect automatic airbag deployment notification, not to mention the fact that most general motors suv's get into the mid 20s for gas milage on the highway. Every Toyota built sends the majority of the funds over to the mid Asian economy which is counter productive to our American society. If you will recall during World War 2 Toyota motor company was making tanks to bring down our defenses. Pleas understand that most GM, FORD, DCX, stay in the United States to help our country grow.

If you maintain your car and it keeps on putting along hey no problem keep it forever. Many times people crash/wreck/destroy cars. Also, in inclimate areas, salt is often spread on the ground. The salt mixes with water and oxygen and causes massive rust corrosion on vehicles over time. Old, fully-functional cars are great. All you need is some upgraded speakers, and a cd or mp3 player and you're set. Where I live you'd also have to have your A/C system converted and updated a little bit as well, but besides that there really is no reason. An internal combustion engine is what it is.

unless you go hybrid, don't bother getting a new car.
Because there's very little consumer demand for better fuel mileage, there hasn't been much progress. It's all about supply and demand. If people demanded better fuel mileage, then the car companies would have to comply or they'd go out of busienss. As long as people keep buying SUV's, they'll keep pumping them out. Simple as.

Because you're looking at American cars, of which labor unions have managed to keep the government from enforcing stricter emissions and mileage regulations.
30k on a new Prius on the other hand, would get you 60+ city and ~54 highway.

True. Mileage has actually gotten worse. What do you get is power. Typical family sedans are running 220hp or 240hp. Higher end cars in the 280hp range.

I CANNOT believe many of you are so self centered!
Why should money be your only motivation to reduce americas fuel consumption??? What about care for the enviroment and awareness of other global issues.
AMERICA HAS 5% OF THE WORLD POPULATION BUT USES 25% OF THE WORLDS OIL RESOURCES.
IS THERE ANYWHERE ELSE THAT HAS CHEAPER PETROL THAN AMERICA? (and innocent people die so that it can stay that way
