FOOD - should be a good place to start.
Make sure the time time is right... and drop hints that you're hungry - and BE willing to PAY - (at least in words). HE WILL definately pick up the TAB.
Alternatively - I liked the suggestion of the sports deals. Guys are suckers for sports (any kind). JOIN HIM in his quest for all things sweaty and full contact ;) - but as we know it - you can make some alterations to likes and dislikes a little later.. hehehhe

First you should talk about something he likes, the ask him on a date retaining to his answer. for instance if he likes sports, take him to a sports bar or a nice food place that is based on what he enjoys.
