The rule of thumb. I use a stick about the diameter of my thumb. Never fails.

Im not a parent or a boy.
Im a 15 year old girl...
When I get in trouble the computer usually gets taken away from me. Im still alout TV and the phone though.. otherwise I'd drive my mom insane.
Other times im just not aloud to hang out with friends for a bit. (if this tactic is used, im aloud on the comp and everything) You don't wanna take away too much, unless it's something big they did wrong!
*also - If I want my punishment shortened I can do extra chores around the house to earn back time.

I never used to ground my kid because it was kind of a punishment for me too but as she got older, the only thing she really cared about was hanging out with friends so now grounding is the standard but sometimes it also includes the phone and computer but not a complete cut-off. For the phone she gets 5 minutes when someone calls her. For internet useage, just check emails and maybe 1/2 hour daily of MSN. I don't want to cut her off completely. She also knows if she does a list of chores then she gets her freedom back. So in a way, it works out for me too.

make them earn their keep, assign chores around the house. reward the good behavior rather than just punish, or you could just do what my dad did when I was in my teens.... kick my *** when I got out of line. if I were to ever go back I would still want it that way.

I just heard this one from my friend and I'm gonna try it. You make them dig knee-deep holes, then you check them & they fill them back in. It's hard work that won't hurt them in any way and it gets out their agression. My friend has four boys, and they are really well behaved!!! Of course it would require that you have a place to dig, but that's not all that difficult.
Much Love!!

consistent discipline that is appropriate
late for curfew - keep at home for weekend and make curfew 1 hour earlier
Rude/backtalk - take away a priveledge (phone, tv, etc)
Drugs/Alcohol - discuss your concerns and ground them to the house
Outdoor chores are always good too
