YES, if my wife would say, "Yes everything will be fine here, I love you even more for doing it" If she would say that and I believed her definently yes. There is no greater job than working with guys who are so dedicated to what they do that they will put there life on the line to save you. I work for a civilian security company in the US and compared to the Marine Corps the difference is black and white. I have a hard time understanding why people are doing this security job if they care nothing about what goes on. The safety of fellow employees and the people that you are supposed to be protecting. It makes no sense. Serving with the guys I was with in Iraq was the best thing I've ever done with my life. And for those who say we shouldn't be there you have to see first hand on what it was like there before we kicked Saddam out. You think car bombs are bad, at least you have more of a probability of dying from that than you would if you were being tortured just because you had a different type of religon, (not even completely different, think methodist and prodestant). You tell me we ain't doing no good there!

Most soldiers don't have a choice...they know that they are going over there for a solid year and they just deal with it...
As for myself....
My husband (who just returned from Iraq with the Army) and I actually discussed this not too long ago.
If he was deployed over there, and I was allowed to go...since we don't have any children to worry about...I would go.
Being back here and not having any idea what is happening, in my opinion is worse than facing what is going on over there.
We constantly think of the worst situation possible.
When we wives are waiting for the next 5 minute phone call, we constantly think that they are in some kind of urgent, hostile fire situation 100% of the time, when in fact some times (although rare...and always at risk), they are sitting in their bunks playing xbox or looking at porn...
Or maybe it is just a control thing....I was taught at a very young age how to handle a weapon, and I would feel more secure "having my husbands back" when things got crazy, than trusting someone I don't even know to back him up....
Again....perhaps just an obsessive compulsive, control freak thing....

Been there, done that, and yeah I would again - as a civilian contractor making the BIAP to IZ hops in black Expeditions with AC, down an MSR that's almost completely covered by heavy weapons, being paid a cool two hundred grand a year. Absolutely, no two ways about it. On the other hand, rolling around in 1114s with no AC, bouncing across the country, from Basra to Kirkuk, Falujah to Hillah on a soldiers salary doesn't sound as attractive.

No. I have a family, friends, three cats, and school here in California. No way would I go to Iraq. That and I am not ready to die yet, I still have a lot of living to do. I want to see more of the world before my life ends.

Join the AF if you don't want to be deployed so long. They'll send you for 2-6 months in 90% of jobs.

Speaking for the military though, we all hate war, even more the idea of being in a hot miserable place with people trying to kill us all the time. We all hate the idea of being away from our families for a week, much less a year. That said, how can you stay home when kids you trained from scratch are getting shot at, how can you be happy leaving early to play golf when your friends are dodging bombs once a week? You serve for your country; you make the other guy die for his country; and, if you have to die you do it for your friends. In that train of thought I'll go anywhere & do anything to keep my friends safe & it doesn't hurt that I agree with our mission in the process.

For that Grandma above, come down & see me I'll let you four wheel one all to hell & back darlin.

There's only one American base left in Iraq that requires you to run around in full battle gear every time you leave a uilding, and that's in Ramadi, in Anbar province. Most US military installations in Iraq now are just like living in a garrison back in the states, you run around in just your uniform, soft cap, and weapon. Some of the bigger bases you don't even carry your weapon around with you.

That being said, there's no way I'd want to come back to this hellhole for another year.

If I could spend it with my son, 3 nephews & a dear friend. Actucally to defend my loved ones, yes I would. I am a pretty good shot & I may never get another chance to drive a Humvee - look I am a grandmother so I figure they would let me ride. If I do not come back, my family will know that I loved them & democracy for my family & other countries more than myself. Not a bad legacy.

look i am a military wife who is about to send her husband back for a second time. i will be a single mother again till he gets back. so for him and the other soldiers i say yes they have no choice but you will never never hear them complain about doing it. they are brave young men who do the job so you can ask questions like this. what about the unseen heroes the children who dont have there daddies home to tuck them in at night. we all sacrafice in some way or another and yet we just do the job. it is all about protecting our land so people can live freely. god bless the troops!!
