Has anyone ever been in line where the cashier treated the customer in front of you with the upmost respect, and when it came to be your turn, they treated you rudely with no courtesy? For example, I greeted the cashier and she ignored me. I always say thank you to the cashier but she just grunts "uh-huh" or says nothing at all? From fast food, to department stores, to anything dealing with retail, tell me your stories.

I worked in retail for many years part time while I was in college and I greeted and thanked every single customer. So I know how it is on the other side dealing with rude customers but my question is about how some cashier treat the person in line in front of me with respect, and when it is my turn they are completely rude even though I am nice to them. Maybe it's because I am asian-american in texas.

Story of my life! Retail helped me through college, so it irks the crap out of me to encounter rude and/or clueless cashiers now. I took pride in my work, but the funny thing is, it's only a matter of using common sense. Greet the customer, make eye contact, take the money when they give it to you, not when your hands are free, be quick, don't chew gum, hand the bag to them, and say something to acknowledge the fact that the transaction is complete. That is SO not hard, and yet, so many cashiers have issues with it. I hate it when the cashier is rude or lifeless, and then I say "thank you" at the end of the transaction. I still feel the need to be nice, but then I get irritated with myself for putting up with it. Ugh! I know exactly what you're talking about. It's gotten a lot better now that I'm an adult, but in general, I think customer service has massively declined.

I am a cashier at a department store this summer, and since for me it's just a part time job to help me with tuition, it's easy for me to be polite. However, for the full time employees who are there taking disrespect from customers for eight hours at a time, I can understand how it would be hard to be 100% cheery all the time.
Okay, so you say thank you to them. What do you expect them to do, cry with gratitude? Usually I thank the customer and not vice-versa, and, actually, they just grunt or say nothing. Which doesn't phase me, because it's not a big deal.
Next time you're upset by a "rude" cashier, put it in perspective. Likely he or she has had a bad day, it's nothing personal, and it won't affect you in any considerable way. So don't worry about it.

Have you ever seen a customer treat a cashier like crap.
That happens more often than a rude cashier.....
There are rude cashiers but the scale tips the other way most of the time.
Cashiers are blamed for everything wrong with the store and they have no control over anything but their register.
If a cashier is rude, you can report them to a supervisor but if the cashier is treated badly they can't tell on the customer.

I would hope that you being of Asian descent would not be the reason for people being rude to you. I am a Texan and in my youth, I had a job where part of my duties included being a cashier. I saw every kind of person under the sun. You couldn't judge people by their appearance, only by their behavior. It was an eye-opening experience. Personally, I would not let someone's lack of respect to me ruin my day. I wont let them have that power over me. If you want revenge, just don't patronize that business again or at least as long as that rude person is serving in a customer capacity.

Yes, several it really bothers me, I used to be a cashier like 8 years ago, I did my best to be as friendly as possible to each and every customer as I could.
But I can tell you that from experience the cashier receives more rude customers then you might think. I had one lady who came in she bought around 15 items, 7 of them were video tapes, she paid she left, she came back awhile later, and yelled at me in front of the entire store saying I charged her twice for a movie , that she was late to her kids birthday because "That stupid women's (me)" my supervisor came over and she as very nice to this women, she took her off to the side. they went threw her bag and receipt, matched all the codes to the items to all 7 she'd bought and paid for. So I didn't do anything wrong. She didn't apologize. It was probably one of the most humiliating things that has ever happened to me.
She refused to ever come threw my line ever again.
But I didn't let get to me, I didn't know what her problem was but I knew I didn't do anything wrong, So, every time I'd see her I'd smile at her extra hard. (probably not the most mature thing to do , but it made me feel better.)

Just put on a happy face if you see her again, it is possible that she might have been having a hard day too!!

I had a cashier at a fast food place ask me nicely if I could order my food to go since it was 10 minutes 'til closing and they all had a rough shift. I'm not sure if that is considered rude, but it sure ain't right.

Yes!! I know exactly what you mean. I bet you're prettier than her and she was just hating. I can't even walk through the mall with out getting hated on! It's a damn shame.

It's probably because you are pretty, and she is ugly. Ugly people are mean to pretty people, especially if the pretty people also appear to be nice. Take it as a compliment that she thinks you are prettier and nicer than she is.

yeah it has happend to me sometimes...but i still go out of my way to converse with them, ask them how they are doing...sometimes, they just take it out on you..to vent what happened earlier with another rude customer...so don't feel offended, it may have nothing to do with you at all!
