Buttercup, you gouged your cousin's head with the clippers and made him bald and now your trying to blame it on a fungus? That's cowardly and cold.

Just kidding. The surest way to tell is with a fungal culture of his scalp. Most docs wont do that, though. Instead, the usually try to see if treatment for tinea capitis makes it better.

UNFORTUNATELY, topical treatments don't work. No cream or ointment cures tinea capitis. You need to give a medicine like griseofulvin for weeks to months.

Sometimes, a persistent bald patch is just a place where hair wont grow- if you see any hair follicles there, though, or know they were there before, then thats not likely to be the case. If the area is bumpy or raised or inflamed, its likely tinea.

It is probably some sort of infection. Sorry to say. Have a doctor look at it, there are medications that can help. I have seen a number of children in schools with this problem. And often they steam from the same thing; unsterile razors/clippers.
Good Luck

I've had ringworm and it's a red itchy rash and gets flaky & white on top. I still had the hair on my leg grow through it. Have his mom take him to the doctor.
