Determining the sex (gender) of a kitten is easy when you know what to look for.
Lift the kitten's tail. The opening just under the tail is the anus. Below the anus is the genital opening which is round in males and is a vertical slit in females. In kittens of similar size, the distance between the anus and the genital opening is greater in the male than the female.
As the male kitten grows the testicles become more apparent.
The color of the kitten may suggest it's gender. Almost all (but not ALL) kittens of calico (black, white and orange) or tortishell (black and orange) color are females. More orange kittens are male than female although the association between color and sex is not as strong as in the calico/tortishell colored kitten.

Well, all cats have tails, so forget that idea. Male cats have testicles and you will see them near the anus. Perhaps you got that idea because you have to pick up their tails to see the testicles. If your kitten prefers dresses, chances are it is a female kitten. But that's not always true either, after what I've seen on Jerry Springer!!

If you look at a kitten from behind, and lift the tail, a female has a dot ( anus ) and a vertical line directly below ( vulva )
a male has a dot and then another dot ( prepuce) with a space in between. It can be challenging in kittens so young, but you can always re-evaluate as they age.

You can tell a kitten's gender from birth.
IF the mother cat is comfortable with you holding the babies, rest them on their backs in your hand.
Look at their bottoms.
Boys will have a "period" shape for the "pee hole" and the girls will have an "exclamation point" for a "pee hole" (sorry for that layman's term, I can't think of the technical term).
For kittens 2 weeks old, male testicles will have already started to drop, so look for the appearance of a "fat sack" underneath the "pee hole"...if there is one, it's a boy, fixing to get it's testicles.

♥ I've had a lot of cats in my lifetime and I could never tell anything but how playful they were by the tail... I think thats a false statement. ♥

no, not by the tail. right under their tail will be their butt/anus (something like this *). little girls will have a "slit" under their butt which is of course the vagina.
I hope you can fiure it out . I had the same problem.
But they're fun & cute anyway!
