Because the Pope is a man and he is the example that the priests follow:

- long white and gold dress,
- with matching gold scarf and hat
- living in a palace in Italy
- with thousands of art work around him
- being served by hundreds of men

Nuns/sisters are different from priests/deacons/bishops.

The male equivalent to a nun/sister in Anglicanism, Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism is a monk or brother. These men often take a vow of poverty along with other vows.

And... correcting the person right above my answer... The Roman Catholic Church is not the only Christian church which has nuns/sisters and monks/brothers. Actually I've just discovered a Lutheran community of sisters/nuns as well:

"Day 11, Wednesday, June 30: Discovering Christ In Community
Travel to Erfurt and enjoy a tour of this beautiful medieval city. Join the Community of the Casteller Ring (a community of Lutheran nuns) at the Augustinian Monastery for daily prayer and a presentation by one of the Sisters of the Community: The Spirituality of Prayer, Work, and Vocation. Overnight in Erfurt at the Radisson SAS Hotel."

And here's what Wikipedia has to say about nuns:

"In general, a nun is a female ascetic who chooses to voluntarily leave mainstream society and live her life in prayer and contemplation in a monastery or convent. The term "nun" is applicable to Roman Catholics, Eastern Christians, Anglicans, Jains, Lutherans, and Buddhists, for example. The male equivalent of a nun is a monk."

I might also add that even though I am not a Roman Catholic I find the remark that Catholics are not Christians to be offensive and small minded.

It depends on what diocese the nun/priest belongs to. Some take a vow of poverty and others do not require it. Some require you to live in a monestary or convent, others do not. There are many different orders that one can belong to and each one has a strong emphasis on certain vows than others.

In Christianity, people don't take vows of poverty. In Catholicism, they do. The two are not to be confused one with the other.

There are three vows: vow of chastity vow of poverty, and the vow of obedience. Nuns/brothers usually take all three. Priests take minimally chastity and obedience and some take poverty as well.

So does a monk, right?
Oh, and it isn't 'in Christianity' that any take a vow. the Bible actually directs people to avoid making vows.

Matthew 5:33 “Again YOU heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You must not swear without performing, but you must pay your vows to Jehovah.’ 34 However, I say to you: Do not swear at all, neither by heaven, because it is God’s throne; 35 nor by earth, because it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King. 36 Nor by your head must you swear, because you cannot turn one hair white or black. 37 Just let your word yes mean yes, your no, no; for what is in excess of these is from the wicked one.

The Catholic Church and her tradition compel those within her ranks to make vows.
