Wow. **sigh** Why don't you skip this heat cycle and read up on dog breeding? First of all, dogs don't have "periods" like humans. They have an estrous cycle, with different stages. The bleeding is the fertile time of the cycle, but you have to know when to breed them. If you aren't even sure when to breed your dog, please do a lot of research before you do.

She will most likely be ready to breed again in about 6 months. That gives you plenty of time to do the following :
1) get her a complete physical exam, with any vaccines updated
2) get a good book or two on dog breeding, and read up on the process
3) save $1500 - $2000 for c-section, if needed
4) get all the supplies that are needed for whelping puppies, including a whelping box, and bottles and replacement milk
5) really think about whether it is worth it to have your dog go through labor, and if you would be willing to lose her if things went bad.

Breeding is not something to be done without a lot of knowledge of not only the process, but also on how wrong things can go. It is not a simple nor a painless process, for you or the dog. And raising puppies properly, getting the vet check ups and vaccines, is not inexpensive either.

A lot of people will tell you that you shouldn't breed, and maybe you shouldn't. All I ask is that you learn all you can before you have your dog bred. You may decide that it is not worth all the work.

Dogs go into heat about every 6 months. About 10 days after going into heat (where there is usually some bleeding), they ovulate and this is when they will breed! She is probably ready to mate now. If you are going to breed dogs, do a lot of research on the subject and what to expect if something goes wrong, like an emergency if the mother dies, or doesn't produce milk and you have to hand feed the puppies, or she needs a C-section in the middle of the night ($1,000 or more). Be prepared for anything!

Hey,
Yes they can, when a dog is going through it's period it's usually the best time. Their period is called a heat. When a dog is on heat they generate a smell that other dogs can smell which generally attracts male dogs to check her out and mate with her. It's the best time for any female dog to pregnant.

If this is her first heat(period), she should not be bred this time. She should be about 18 months old before you even think about breeding her and then only if you have researched everything you can find on raising puppies. If she has been in heat for a week and a half, she is in her prime time, but as I said should not be bred until 18 months or older.

I believe that they generally have a period, it lessens a bit after a few days (probably like yours is experiencing now) and that is when they mate, then it will increase again. Generally heat lasts about 3 weeks for dogs.

Dogs can only mate with a female while they are in heat to get her pregnant. If shes not in heat, she more than apt will not allow the male to mount her.
Do you research on breding before you think about this. Its much tougher than expected.

Ok this "period" is actually called" being in heat" and it is during this time that males will seek out the female for breeding purposes. This is the most likely time for impregnation.

Yes, that's when they go into heat. My dog had 6 puppies out of it; I never knew how hard it was going to be to find each one of them a good home, and they were free. My dog was in heat for 1 month.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats why you see many males trying to get at a female in heat.
a heat cycle lasts for three weeks, dogs are to be breed in the second week
they bleed one week on and one week of (to breed) if not preganant they bleed another week.
