I don't know but it sure is fun to sneak up behind them and tape it shut and call UPS, All kidding aside cat's like having a den to give birth in and when cat's climb into a box it gives them a sense of security because that's where they were born

I have noticed that too!

I think that they like to explore - cats will nose into almost anything and boxes have a nice dry warm texture and they don't get shouted at for scratching a cardboard box

my cats love to sit in boxes. when i receive a package in the mail, i'll put the empty box on the floor and they'll get right in. one at a time, of course; but sometimes my siamese will head butt the other one out if he wants to get in. cats must like the feel and smell of the cardboard, plus they get to rub their cheeks up against the edges to mark their scent.

they do it to hide.
well.. my oldest cat rookie does it to hide from his little brother milo.
i think it also makes them feel secure. they dont have to worry about being attacked or bothered from the back or the sides.
i know that my -loves- boxes when we bring them home.
think of them as little club houses for cats. =)

I think its because the think you can't find them there. My cat's the same except she thinks under the coffee table is the best place to hide.

Hey,
In the wild cats would usually live in small secluded caves where nothing dangerous and no preditors could get to them or their kittens. It's basically just a home within a home and there is nothing to worry about all. All cats just like to be in a small, warm and safe area.

they play with anything. but put them in a box and they go nuts. we used to try and put kittens in a box to move them and they go nuts jumping all over the place. its ok when they do it themselves.

Ever read "Calvin and Hobbes"? Maybe they're transmogrify-ing themselves into odd things.

Also, they like the feeling of being surrounded on all sides. I read that somewhere -- random fact. That's why they freak out when you -move- the box... it's not so stable and comfortable anymore.

I think cats like to sit in boxes because it makes them feel secure. Also, it makes them feel very cozy in enclosed places.
