Just shrug it off and get on with my life.

Hey AJ...aaaahhh sorry can't remember your logon name. I clicked to fast on the question.
Man, I wish Yahoo Answers would put the name of the question asker on this answer page. Does anyone else feel that way? I am going to suggest that to Yahoo as soon as I am done here!
Anyhoo.
My guess is that the person is probably a coworker or some sort of peer that you see often.
There are a few possibilities that I can think of.
1. She/he does not want to embarrass you with a situation/confrontation that you may not be able to discuss in a non emotional way.
2. She/HE is embarrassed about it and does not want you to think that this is common for her to do.
3. She?he is feeling unwanted and lonely and wanted some validation in her life.
4. She/HE feels she made a mistake and cannot face it.
5. Her/HIs best friend wants you and she wanted to have you first. (Okay, bad example there sorry, In my case it was the sister/brother and I regret it.)
Enuf said on reasons. The main challenge is how you are reacting. SheHE might be on this site asking the same question of your encounter as well.
You need to talk to her/him about it and find out if she/he is okay with it and if this was all there will ever be. Get it out and be honest. Mistakes happen and lust is a huge mistake maker. Give her/him the chance to admitt it (if there) and move on. Please do not fool yourself into believing a permanant life together is possible. Be honest with how you feel and accept their answer if they tells you that nothing will become of the two of you. So please forget it happened. As a side note to others, When a woman tells you no it means NO. Just thought I would throw that in.
Cheers,
Jeff

What happened before the one night stand?

Did I knew it was only a one night stand?. If nothing was said before, then I would have to assume that there were possibilities of becoming steady. With that in mind I would feel used, deceived, totally devalued. It meant nothing to her.

Probably a bit depressed, was it that bad?

I must give an answer contrary to the other apes answering your question, whose best friend is probably their lubricated hand.

If this happened to me, I would be truly shocked, very much perplexed, and think the girl a bit of a skank. Just because men have done this for ages, doesn't make it right.

Duh!

I have had a few one night stands and though that didn't happen to me, I would have to simply move forward with my life and shake it off. If she doesn't want anything to do with me afterwards, I guess that's tough.

I'd be totally pissed off! I don't like a woman who does that. I'm not that kind of person. I'm too kind hearted and sensitive to both put up with that and actually do that myself. I have a conscience.

I can't lie. My feelings would be hurt.

I'd be crushed. I (contrary to popular belief) don't give it up to everyone I see. It's still special to me. So if I did it, I did it expecting something more...

But I would respect her space. I don't really chase women. I figure you all have enough men doing that already.
