This refers to Australia, but may apply to others as well, why is produce offered at farmers' markets so much more expensive than in the supermarket or greengrocers, they are supposed to be selling direct to the public and cutting out the middle man, but just about everything is usually quite a few dollars more in price.

It is because local farmers are trying to pay a mortgage, send the kids to school, etc., while the produce at the store comes from a super-mechanized farm that gets more from fewer plants through the use of herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, and advanced technology.

Dunno. Could be that they have to deal with fast spoilage outside without refrigeration. Or they could be just plain greedy.
