I'm not intending to poke fun at any beliefs; I'm trying to understand. Someone gave me a prayer cloth & I don't know what to do? How long is it good for? Do I put it under my pillow, or what?
No disrespect intended at all.

Oh; I have a herniated disc in my lower back.

I went with a friend to a meeting tonight. The lady called up people who were ill or injured. I have a bad back. She prayed over this hanky-looking thing & gave it to me, & moved on to the next person. I just don't know what to do with it, or how it works, or how long it's good for.

Prayer cloths are primarily used for healing, and secondly for deliverance from evil spirits. For example, if someone is very sick physically or mentally, a prayer cloth, (which has been prayed over in fervent believing faith for the sick person), is placed strategically on or under the person's body. This is a form of the cloth "standing in proxy" for the laying on of hands. If they are sick with back problems, you would place the cloth under their back. If they have been mentally ill for a time, (depression, hallucinations, etc.) you would place the cloth under their head. These are only a couple of examples. The main thing you need to know is that God honors the use of prayer cloths, but they must be prayed over and placed in FAITH that God can and will restore healing to the person. It's kind of like putting all your prayers, hope and faith into the cloth, and then contacting the person with the cloth, i.e. contacting the person with the prayers, hope and faith of those who prayed and believe. Kind of like putting laundry in the dryer and pushing a button - the dryer will now dry the clothes, rather than you having to stand there for hours or days tossing the clothes round and round in the dryer to let air fluff them. Close the door, turn it on, and the dryer will do the rest. So it is with prayer cloths - pray in faith over the person, releasing the anointing into the prayer cloth, place the prayer cloth, and go in faith believing that God will heal the person.

P.S. This is not a Catholic thing; it is straight from the bible (unlike most of Catholicism). You will find an example of this in Acts 19 : 12 -- So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

Paul could not be there in person in many cases, so he would remove a piece of his apparel (handkerchief or apron) and send it along to "stand in proxy" of his hands, which he would have laid on the person had he been there to do so.

Is this prayer cloth small or is it like a head-covering size? If it is large, drape it over your head while in prayer, it is blessed; If it is small, I'd imagine you'd hold it in your hands while in prayer. As to how long it will be good for, that's up to you, how much you believe it to be blessed. If you are going through a horrible phase in your life, and it is a small one, I would suggest you bury it in the back yard of your home once your turbulent period is over. You will release a lot of negative energy into it and it will lose it's effectiveness. If it is large, you should only use it when you intend to be deeply in prayer, almost a meditative prayer state, and keep it somewhere special. I am sorry if I offend you by telling you that I am a Wiccan, but I love everyone for who they are, and am giving you my most honest answer to help you with this prayer cloth. I respect all religions and hope you do the same- Blessed be

Ok, I scrolled back up to your question and saw that you have the herniated disk, and that it's a smallish handkerchief? Believe that Jesus gave his blessing through that woman who blessed it, and truly believe it will help you. Keep it close to your injury. The energies put into this cloth both from the woman and also your own energies, believing that Jesus will heal you, will do this. Then, when you are healed, definitely bury it, to the south of your property. Again, Blessed be

Sorry, folks... those of you who think this is a "Catholic thing." There is a fundamentalist, Bible-quoting preacher on TV who promotes his green healing cloth. You can read about it here:

All this bashing of Wiccans and Roman Catholics gets a wee bit old. How about we leave both groups alone and stop throwing stones? I think some of them are bouncing back into your own camp.

If you are Christian my advice is to toss the cloth and use the direct route... "we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." There is no need for cloths. If you're not a Christian, pray anyway. he listens. Keep in mind though that "healing" covers a lot more than curing physical ailments. We lost our youngest to leukemia when she was seven. Love and Peace was the healing that moved through us all at the end and continues to flow through us though the mental pain of losing her is still there.

Also... Very important... Take care of yourself, stick to your medical plan of healing with your doctor(s). A herniated disc is a rotten thing. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this.

My best to you, Sawyer.

Bill... who is neither a Roman Catholic nor a Wiccan and thinks stones are best left on the ground

Prayer Cloths In The Bible

Prayer does not require a special cloth. I think it was just given as a symbol of Prayer. the person who answered above has the intended use, but God does not really care about that.

The Bible says when Jesus was nailed to the cross the veil of the temple was torn in two ,from top to bottom (matthew 27:51).To me this symbolizes the barrier between God and man being undone.I don't believe you need a prayer cloth to reach God. -----Rev.Jason Petty

It seems like a Catholic thing.

A lot of Catholic rituals are hybrids of Wiccan ideals in order to convince the masses that they should convert.

It's all about prayer and love!

I wonder if this practice relates to the story of the woman who was very ill who sought to touch the hem of Christ's garment. She believed in doing so she could be healed. Seems possible, a piece of cloth---part of a garment??? Anyone know the origin of the practice? (...not trying to cramp your question here, just curious...) :-)

Throw it away. If you need healing ask God to heal you? Jesus the Son of God died for you, not a prayer cloth

I am Catholic, and I have never heard of a prayer cloth. Do you mean a scapular?
