You didn't metnion if you'll be visiting for the first time, with kids, parents, or what, so here are some general suggestions.
Make sure not to miss the FDR memorial- it's off the mall slightly, so you have to know where it is as you won't just stumble across it, but it's probably the best memorial there.
Go to the national arboretum in NE DC.
Spend some time people watching one evening at Dupont Circle (pass on this one if homosexuality offends you).
Take a daytrip out to Mt. Vernon (George Washington's home).
The National Portrait Gallery just opened, and is apparently very cool.
Go to the Hirshorn sculpture gallery and their sculpture garden.
From now until Aug 14 there are free movies on the Mall monday evenings.
Go visit the Holocaust Museum. You need tickets in advance, but they're free and keep it from becoming overly crowded.

The Smithsonian.... a great museum in a LOT of buildings, eight or nine... I think.
The Zoo. (especially since a new baby panda has been born there!)
The National Archives... see the actual Declaration of Independence! See the actual Constitution! (try to read that weird HANDWRITING!)
Congress! (some great art in the rotunda)
The White House( some great stuff there too)
The Washington Monument! (if the temperature and humidity are right, it rains INSIDE!)
The FBI museum!
take a tour and see the monuments! Lincoln Memorial! Jefferson Memorial! The WALL( aka as the Vienam Memorial)
(used to LIVE there, was BORN there!)

The Smithsonian museums are really cool...I enjoyed seeing all of the monuments and memorials.
Another cool thing to do is to go visit Arlington National Cemetary and watch the changing of the guard, see JFKs grave, and other interesting stuff. You can also go see the white house and capitol building
theres tons of fascinating stuff to do in Washington DC, I also reccomend the International Spy Museum! enjoy
