Paleontologists are discovering that birds had 'wings' before they could even fly. They were even feathered! These 'wings' helped keep in heat and over several million years some species learned how to use those arm feathers and fly. Birds discovered that they could fly to help get away from predators, to help get to foods that other animals were eating and they probably learned to fly because it was a faster (and easier?) way of getting from one area to another. Most animals had to walk. Birds could use the wind and use less muscle power to go farther distances. There's probably more reasons but scientists don't know all the answers yet ^.^ .
