New prices:

"tupperware" (polyethylene) boats for lakes: 250-350

plastic sea kayaks suitable for big water: $1000

fiberglass sea kayaks: $1500

kevlar sea kayaks (a bit lighter): $1800

For doubles, add about 50%.

For some very pretty wooden ones (I've built Pygmy's kits), singles are $700, doubles $1100, plus 40 to 80 hours of your labor.

Or do you mean whitewater kayaks? $500-1000 for entry-level to intermediate boats.

Look for a retailer like REI that does "kayak clinics" at a local lake so you can "try on" several models.
