I painted my bedroom in 18 inch squares. Three colours of brown. (I got the idea from the trading spaces book, I believe it was the painting one) I put 2 coats of the lightest colour on the whole wall. I measured at the top of the wall 18 inches all the way across making ticks at the top, the middle and the bottom, and then I did the same horizontally. Then with a chalk line. (Little tool with string and chalk) I made my lines. Then with masking tape I started with one colour and taped all those squares. (Make sure you put the tape on the outside of the square, you will have some over lapping in some corners of squares) Then I did two coats of that colour, and I repeated until all three colours were completed. Took the tape off carefully. Did a few touch ups. Oh a helpful tip, with white chalk or pencil lightly write the name of the colour you are using in each square to keep from losing track. Good luck and take your time it is really worth it when it is done. Everyone that sees it loves it.

First paint the whole wall in the light color that you want for the squares, then after the base has dried for a couple of days you can use a large level to pencil in the squares. You can then mask along the lines and paint in the squares.

First, measure your squares and mark them on the wall. Use painter's tape (get it at the paint store) to mark off your squares. Fill in one colour, let dry, then the other colour. I'd use latex paint because you can clean up with tap water.

Make the light color the base color then measure and tape off the squares. Fill in the correct taped squares with the darker color and wait for the paint to dry. Remove the tape.

I did this in my daughter's room... follow the advice to mark off squares with painter's tape, BUT.. I made the mistake of occasionally not including the width of the tape in the square, so I often had to remove the tape & paint in the space it covered. (you'll know what I mean when you mark off your squares).
