I found him in the 1930 census:

Bacon, Charlotte, VA
Glasco Staten, abt 1879 Virginia Head
Sarlie C Staten, abt 1884 Wife
Johnnie Staten, abt 1910 Son
Abraham Staten, abt 1913 Son
Isaac Staten, abt 1914 Son
David Staten, abt 1917 Son
Joseph Staten, abt 1918 Son
Alice M Staten, abt 1919 Daughter
Robert Staten, abt 1920 Son
George Staten, abt 1921 Son
Paul Staten, abt 1923 Son
Jacob Staten, abt 1924 Son
Mathew Staten, abt 1927 Son
Elizah Staten, abt 1928 Son

He is renting, for $5 a month. He and the first two kids work as farm laborers.

In 1920 he used just his initials. People did that more in the south than in the north - Texans, both black and white are notorious for doing so - but enough northerners did it to frustrate researchers all over the nation. The family is still in Bacon:

(Name, age, birth state, race)

G C Staten, abt 1880 Virginia Black
Sadie Staten, abt 1884 Virginia Black
Dasy Staten, abt 1904 Virginia Black
Clabon Staten, abt 1906 Virginia Black
Bennie Staten, abt 1907 Virginia Black
Johnie Staten, abt 1908 Virginia Black
Charlie Staten, abt 1910 Virginia Black
Abraham Staten, abt 1912 Virginia Black
Isaac Staten, abt 1913 Virginia Black
David Staten, abt 1915 Virginia Black
Joseph Staten, abt 1916 Virginia Black
Alice Staten, abt 1918 Virginia Black
Robert L Staten, abt 1919 Virginia Black

He is a farmer. All the kids down to and including Charlie are "farm helpers."

You have 1910.

In 1900 He's in the index as "Glasgur Statan".

He is still in Bacon.

(Name, relation, sex, birth month & year. "*" are letters I could not read.)

Flurnay, Mannie (Flu*m**, Man**), head, female, b. May 1827, widowed, bore 9 children, 2 still living
Statan, Glasg**, grandson, May 1879, farm labor
Statan/Staton, Ila*b** (In the index as "Ilarborin"), grandson, April 1883. I suspect he is "Claiborne"

1890 is lost in flames, drat the luck.

These are the only Statens in Bacon in 1880:

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Race Age Birthplace Occupation Father's Birthplace Mother's Birthplace
Ezra STATEN Self M Male B 30 VA. Farm Laborer VA. VA.
Willann STATEN Wife M Female B 25 VA. Keeping House VA. VA.
Jacob STATEN Son S Male B 3 VA. VA. VA.
Sally B. STATEN Dau S Female B 1 VA. VA. VA.
Rachel STATEN Dau S Female B 4M VA. VA. VA.
--------------------------------------------------------
Source Information:
Census Place Bacon, Charlotte, Virginia

They are probably related; if Glasco came along in 1880 instead of 1879 and got it wrong on the 1900, this could be his father and mother.

I can't find Mannie in the 1880.

As to how - keep digging. Keep trying different combinations. Remember that people don't always spell things consistently.

The US Gen Web site for Charlotte County might help.

My last name is Stayton, but they both come from the same place, as there were two brothers who parted, and one changed his name. Then with immigration, and mis-spelling, other derivitives of the name appeared. My great aunt Letha VanPelt researched a lot, and my dad just recently gave me all of her research. I just started looking through it, but I'd be glad to share what I have. e-mail me!
