I have an older computer with Windows XP Pro and I just purchased a new PC with Windows XP Home. How do I get the pro version from the old computer to the new one? Thanks!

Well,

If it is a valid purchased copy of Windows XP you should have the installation disk, but if it came on a computer you bought from like say Dell, it will only reinstall on that computer or another Dell like it.

Unpurchased or pirated XP will not update itself. If you have the disk and it is a full install disk for XP you can call Microsoft and tell them you have purchased a new computer and will only be running it on the new one and they will reset your info to allow it to update.

If you are not using the old computer, you could move the hard drive to the new one, use it as the boot or main disk drive and use the one that came on the new computer for a second drive.

That would probably be the easiest way.

Use Files and Settings wizard in the system tools(Start-Program-Accessories-System Tools) to transfer the files and settings in the old computer to new computer.I recommend only files is transfer from your new computer. It might have problem when you transfer settings that is not the same operating system
that you transfer.Upgrade your Home Edition of Windows Xp to Professional by installing windows xp pro then choose upgrade

You can extract the product key and you will need the windows xp pro cd to installed, but if you are using your computer at home you don't really need windows xp pro because the difference between home and pro are only a few, and you just need them when you are in a corporation using active directory and servers.

You will have to format the hard drive on the new computer and then install XP Pro on it. Also, you have to un-install XP Pro on the old machine so that the copy will be valid.

What you are trying to do is probably illegal . If you have the CD you can just install it again and reactivate it. If you do not You should take out the hard drive from your new computer and connect it to the other computer. You should then replace all the system files in the new disk with the ones from the old one.

You can either:
- take out the old hard drive and put it in the new computer permanantly

- you can buy software in the store which copies, backs up or duplicates hard drives, put both hard drives in the same computer make an exact copy of the old hard drive onto the new hard drive, and you're set and are done with the old hard drive.

I've done both.

You can't. Windows prevents the transfer of systems from one computer to another. You just have to buy a new program.
