I live in Mexico and the majority of people write haber but it doesn't make as much sense to me as a ver does. It would be like Let's see if what you said is true. and Haber would be something like; have seen if what you said is true.

That is because most of them are ignorant, even if they have a Ph. D.
It MUST be "A ver..", because it is like saying "Let's see..."
If somebody says something else, they might be native speakers as well, but totally ignorant of how our language works and with very poor writing skills. Sad but true.

The correct version is: A ver si es cierto lo que dijiste.

A Ver = To see or Let's see.

Haber = From the verb "To Be" or "To Have" as in the following sentences:

1.- Deberia the haber una taza azul en la cocina.

There should be a blue mug in the kitchen.

2.- Habria una taza azul en la cocina si no la hubiera roto Luis

There would be a blue mug in the kitchen had Luis not broken it.
as opposed to :

2.- A ver si tienes suerte

Lets see if you have any luck.

3.- A ver si es cierto lo que dices.

Let's see if what you are saying is true.

There are the differences. Hope this helps.
