It is said that any person in the world can be somehow related (not blood) to any other person by linking them together with six other people. For instance A is friends with B who is the cousin of C who is the sister-in-law of D who was the maid of honor in E's wedding who married F who knows a from a previous job.

Some people like to call it the Kevin Bacon game and see if you can relate someone to Kevin with 6 degrees of separation. I think this is stupid, but it works.

6 degrees of separation refers to how many people are "between" any two other people. If A knows B, that is 0 degrees of separation. If A knows C and B knows C, then A and B are "separated" by 1 degree of separation (C). If A knows C and C knows D and D knows B, then A and B are separated by 2 degrees of separation (C and D). And so forth.

It means that one person or object can be connected to any other person by six steps. Or, they are separated by six degrees. For example, Robin Williams and Billy Crystal co-hosted Comic Relief. Billy Crystal played Miracle Max in The Princess Bride, directed by Rob Reiner. Rob Reiner is the son of Carl Reiner. Carl Reiner developed the Dick Van Dyke show. Dick Van Dyke also starred in Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews. That means there are 6 degrees of separation between Robin Williams and Julie Andrews. There could be other ways of doing it, but that one is the first one that came to mind.

As mentioned before it started with the theory that if you meet a random person you are normally connected to that person through 6 or less relationships. The most famous example is the website which relates movie actors to Kevin Bacon.

I believe it came from a play, later made into a movie, by that name.
A young black man convinces a family that he is the son of Sydney Poitier. He knew someone who knew someone who had a grudge on the family, and he kept lying to them as they took care of him.
Interesting premise.

I heard it means that, between you and any other living person, there are 6 people, at most.

Example: me and Brad Pitt: me---->sister--->guy sister did business with in LA----->Mr. Pitt's agent---->brad Pitt. Ta-da!
