Do Christians not have dictionaries ?? Look up atheist, then look up religion. Religions are beliefs in supernatural entities or divine powers. How again is atheism a religion then ???

55yrsnholdin: I guess you don't like dictionaries. And no, it doesn't take any faith to not believe in god. It takes lots of hard, scientific facts and evidence.

acaykath: It is true that Dictionary.com lists that definition of religion AS ITS 4TH and LAST definition (least common) of religion. The vast majority of references and definitions to religion though are based on supernatural entities. Very few people talk using term "religion" to refer to just a non-supernatural set of beliefs.

Atheism is a religion if you consider bald a hair color.

Why do you care? You are saying believers of another system should leave you in peace yet you antagonize them? Freedom works both ways. You are free to believe whatever you want, as am I, and everyone else. And yes, atheism is a belief structure, or a religious belief, but not an organized religion. I would be happy to discuss this if you remian civil. And as far as hard facts and evidence to prove atheism...there are none. Atheism is simply the belief, or claim, that there is no god. How can you prove that? I am sure you can disprove things like Noah's ark or the feeding of the 5000 but that does not prove atheism, and not everyone takes the Bible 100% literally, myself for example.

I'd say that atheism is a religion, and I'll explain.

Belief in God requires faith without scientific proof, which you already know. However, atheism is also a belief. In my view, though many atheists reject the belief in God because His existence cannot be scientifically proven, His non-existence cannot be proven either, no matter what scientific method you use. People often confuse science and belief. Belief is the acknowledgement of something without any factual data to prove it. Science is the knowledge of something that can be proven by experimentation and has factual, material data that can be mearsured. Which answers the question as to why science cannot prove or disprove the existence of God. God does not exist in the material realm. In order for science to be of any effect, God would have to be made of some type of matter that can be measured and weighed like everything else in the material world. Obviously, though, this can never happen.

God is immaterial. He is spirit. Eternal, infinite. Science cannot reach the heights of God. Therefore, it is utterly useless to even use science to argue whether God exists or not.

An added note: God is God. He can reveal Himself in any form He wishes. If He wanted appear as your own reflection in your mirror and talk to you He could. But He has already revealed Himself in the person of Jesus Christ. My point is that who are we to demand that God prove Himself to us? Who are we to set standards and rules that God has to follow for our satisfaction?

If anything God has already come down and revealed Himself in the most humble way possible: He became a man. And then He died for us.

God bless,

Danny

Acakath: The Webster dictiontionary says it is believing in no god. What dictionary are you using? A Christian version. Your definition suits that of the definition of religion.

Atheism is not a religion. It is not anti-religion or anti-god.

It does not take more than faith to believe in 'nothing' because faith IS believing in the unknown.

You are right, however.

See Athiesm is a made up religion for those that do not believe in a higher power. However the term is a religious category system. In other words it is a religious term that you are not religious.

so when you are stating your religion you can easily say Athiest compared to I don't believe in a higher power. I mean can you think of a better way of saying your inbelief?

nonreligion could mean that you that you are still searching, so this does not clearly define Athiests.

The truth is Athiesm is not a religion, however it is a religious term.

Christianity is a family, not a religion. You can make anything a religion, getting up in the morning and taking a shower before you go anywhere. I have a family in Christ, why do you think we call each other "Brothers and Sisters?"

Well if you go to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, one of the definitions it list is," a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices". For Atheist it says,"one who believes that there is no deity ".Both definitions together sum it up.A group of people with religious attitudes, beliefs and practices about their non-belief of God.

Your sects are the ones who are saying that they are a so-called religion. This is why they justify their visits in this section and intervene by converting others to atheism. Plus some call themselves spiritual atheist. Go figure? Possibly demonic or satanic but not spiritual in my dictionaries!

I guess it depends upon which definition you use:
religion
n.
A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/religion

That's the fourth meaning according to that site.

I also find that depending on what kind of atheist, they can be as blind about what they believe as they complain that Christians are.

One I boarded with actually didn't think that his belief was a belief. I'm not sure he would admit it even now.

Some of the most unscientific people that I write to on boards are atheists. they don't need proof of God to deny Him. Ridiculous!

Your definition of RELIGION is rather narrow-minded. You need to read the rest of the definitions that define RELIGION.

ATHEISM IS A RELIGION because anything you ardently believe in can be considered a religion.

You ardently believe in Atheism. Therefore, Atheism is your religion.

Rather Simple.

It's not a religion, but it is a belief--a belief that there is no god. I've wondered that, too, not necessarily about Christians, but when I hear people say things like, "I'm agnostic, so I believe we keep getting reincarnated until God decides to keep us..."
