I have never served God out of fear but out of deep love and commitment for what He's done for me.

I'm Agnostic, and went through the fervent athiest faze.

Athiests tend to resent religious ppl. One way is to discredit their love for god by calling it fear. [Afterall, most Athiests find themselves running into Xtians that say that they will be banished to hell if they don't fear the wrath of god and such. So it kinda makes sense, from their point of view...Since it's all they're exposed to.]

Unfortunatly, everyone likes to judge and classify others in ways they see fit. You can't always do that to a specific group of ppl. There might be some Xtians out there who do believe cause they fear, but you can't simply say that about everyone. It's terribly ignorant.

I respect you and your beliefs. Athiests should as well.

However, you yourself are classifying athiests as ppl that discredit Xtianity. This, is also very, very wrong.

See how classifying gets us nowhere?

Im athiest but I dont think christians serve god out of fear HOWEVER I do believe the bible puts "the fear of god" into you, as it says if you do certain things you will be punished etc..
If I read the bible as a child, I guarantee I would believe in him because I would be scared not to! I would be scared of going to hell. Perhaps thats why??

Not all non-Christians think that. I don't try to decide why you believe what you believe. I try to decide why I believe what I believe.

There was fear involved in Christianity for me. Fear that I would go to hell. Fear that my loved ones would go to hell. If there were no hell, there would be no need to worship God, now would there?

But maybe God isn't so needy that He would sacrifice His children to eternal damnation because He didn't get enough attention while we were on Earth. That's my conclusion.

You believe what you want, so long as you are happy and not hurting others. If you say that fear is not a factor in your beliefs or worship, that's good enough for me.

Because when Atheists Were Christians they served him out of fear. They only achieved bible knowledge but sadly didn't try to achieve a personal relationship with Father therefore they quit! Christians are Not Fearful. God does not give his children a spirit of Fear but of Love,Joy and a Sound mind. God bless you and yours!

Well for the record, I believe that only some percentage of christians serve god out of fear. Not sure what that % is, I could guess, but I won't.

But to answer the question:
God smites you and sentences you to eternal damnation in hell (eternity is a VERY long time, too) if you don't believe in him.
Sounds to me like the ultimate fear weapon. You HAVE to believe in him or else you will suffer for all eternity.

Some christians do.

Some serve god as you do.

Haven't you ever wondered where the term "god fearing" came from?

I really don't care what the atheists think, but I am a devout Christian, and I do fear God. But it is an awsome fear of the power of God. I don't mean I am scared of God, but I do have a reverant fear of him.

Not all atheists believe this.

Many atheists and agnostics respect the deep love and commitment Christians (and Muslims and Jews, etc.) feel for the God of their faith.
