Yeshua is the original Aramaic proper name for Jesus the Nazarene, who lived from about 6 B.C.E. to 27 C.E. (A.D.) The word "Jesus" is actually a mis-transliteration of a Greek mis-transliteration. The Emperor Constatine even mistook Jesus for Apollo, the son of the Greek god Zeus. In Hebrew Yeshua means Salvation while the name Jesus has no intrinsic meaning in English whatsoever.

Felix,
"Jesus" is the romanized version, of the greek version of the Christ's earthly name. An approximate version of His hebrew name, is Yeshua Ben Yoseph, or Yeshua.

Bobbi and seer1213 are correct. A better question would be, why was Jesus called Christ? Christ is a title, not a name, and its literal translation is "the anointed one".

Actually, he was born Joshua beth David, of the house of David. The Angel that came down declared that his name be 'Emmanuel'. Basically, though, 'Jesus' is a variant of Joshua, and Christ is just from the greek 'kristos' for light.

Actually Jesus was his name. "Christ" is the translation of the Greek kurios which means "Lord."

In Greek, Jesus is Iesous. In Hebrew, it is Yeshua, a form of the name Joshua, which means "help of YHVH"
