Instal an actual computer in the car under the seat.
First generation MP3 players in cars were operated this way.
You can't just "stick it in the dash", etc.
Look online (google) about the topic, there are many "how to build" sites out there...or least they were before MP3 became normal in car stereo's.
Plus you can always add on a cd changer that plays mp3's, 10 disc cd changer, 200 odd songs per cd in mp3 format....can't get too bored with 2000 songs at your finger tips.

You need what's called a "carputer".
The idea is to have a "non-hard drive" based machine that runs standalone Windows XPE (pre-installation environment, not to be confused with WinPE, actual Windows XP design the way YOU want it) from a CD from one CD-ROM. Your MP3's are stored on a DVD and up to three DVD-ROMs may be used for DVD MP3's since there is no hard drive. Three DVD's hold 14 Gig of info which equals about 2500 songs or more.
No hard drive means nothing will crash. A touch screen display is really the only other peice of equipment needed.
My diagnostic stand alone CD version of Windows XPE runs:
7-Zip
Adobe Acrobat 7.0
CWShredder
Get Data Back for NT
Nero Burning ROM
Spybot Search & Destroy
Norton Ghost 9.0
and many many more utilities.
...but it could be MADE to run anything you want.
Start here http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ then look up http://www.bootcd.us/BartPE_Plugins_Author/Sherpya/ for creating a full bootable CD.
If you need help in creating a stand alone CD version of Windows XPE, I can help.

that is funny...
but a good question though, I'd find a cd-rom that has the little buttons, one for "play" and the other one for "stop" (first of all, I don't think they even sale those anymore, nowadays is all about the dvds) then feed the right voltages trough the power connection, one is ground, one is 12V the other one is +5 and I think the last one is -5, but not too sure, and then connect the audio out of your drive to the audio in of the car stereo... easier said than done... and worthless... just buy a cd-player for a car... at the flea markes is going to cost you around $30 for aobut a very cheap one.
