It would depend on the cause of the double vision. Without more background about the medical history we cannot adequately answer the question. Since a patch over one eye will not help I assume it is a monocular problem (double vision in one eye rather than the two eyes together causing the double vision). Is there double vision in each eye (when you cover the left, the right still sees double, when you cover the right the left sees double)?

Male or female, in good shape or not, by the time you are 85 years of age, there are many things that happen to the body. If 'double vision' is all that he/she has, that's not bad - most people have catteracts and everything else by then. Honestly though, I don't think I would want my 85 year old (wife/husband/grandparent/aunt-whomever) on the road. They should be sitting on the passenger side enjoying the view and leaving the driving to the loved ones who can see clearly.

If glasses are worn continuously over time the poor vision will generally become worse. Essentially what glasses do is lock the eyes into their refractive state and in order to see through your lenses you have to maintain the poor vision that the lenses are designed to correct.
This the method I used to restore perfectly my vision naty secret to restore 'near perfect' 20/20 vision naturally http://improve-vision.kyma.info
However, here's the good news:
You can improve your eyesight by simply learning, naturally and practicing the correct way to see for a few small minutes a day. “Vision Without Glasses” - program you'll be taken by the hand, it shows you how to improve your vision naturally, permanent and complete solution. Even the American Optometric Association has been forced to admit these things!
I'm sure that you will not regret your decision.

I have to agree with everyone else. It's time to hang up the keys. I have perfect vision and wouldn't drive with a patch over one eye. Most accidents are caused by teenagers and elderly people. It's great that she is in good health otherwise. Driving is a small part of life. Offer to drive her where she needs to go.

If a patch over one eye wont work there is no cure. There is something with the eye or the brain and it is best for this one to stay off the road!

At 85 years old, they shouldn't be driving anymore even if their vision is good.
Their reflexes aren't good anymore, they should have someone chauffeur them around.
As for the double vision, I don't know what will cure it. Ask their eye doctor.

no, there's no cure. it's called old age. body parts wear out. even if she could see, i'm seriously doubting if there aren't other reason to keep her off the road.
