"Corky" will be 26 yrs old this October. He is totally blind now and will not climb the perches in his cage. But he eats well and can still whistle St. Louis Blues and the theme song from the old Andy Griffith show.

AVERAGE: If you do research, the information you will find will probably say the average life is 15 years. However, this takes in to consideration that the average person feeds their bird fatening sunflower seeds and doesn't clip their wings and has cats chasing their bird LOL.

HOW LONG CAN THEY LIVE? I have never ever heard of a cockatiel living 40 years in captivity. If anybody has., I'd really like to see the source behind the information. They usually go 15-20 years. I think early 30s is possible, but not very common.

I would guess, that if you feed your bird fruit/other pellet products like zupreem.. and supplement the food with others as recommended by the manufacturer, keep it's wings clipped, keep it's mind active and love your cockatiel.. it will probably reach 20 yrs of age. Anything past that is a bonus! :)

Cockatiels are sorta prone to obesity problems... so try to keep them away from the fattening foods and seeds.

If they don't like fruits and veggies, cook it in home made cornbread - they'll gobble it right up!

Also spritz your bird with water at least once a day!

Clean their cages often.

Fresh water once or prefer twice a day.

Fresh food daily. (and the recommended amount, not friggin a cup of food per cockatiel! LOL)

If you put that much food in front of me, i'd get it and get fat and die early too! :)

A cockatiel can some times live some where in the neighborhood of 40 - 50 years. A Makau Parrot can live up to 75 - 90 years birds like that are like the energizer rabbit they keep going and going and going. Your bird you say is blind but it's usually just cateracks I would say look forward to at least 10 more years!

My cockatiel is 24. He's gotten a little grumpy this past year, so I'm not sure how much time he has left. He still eats well, but he sleeps a lot more now.

A cockitiel's life expectancy is somewhere between 15 and 20 years, but I've heard stories of some living into their 30's. Im glad to hear that he got such good care that he was able to live that long. Unfortunatelly 26 years old is way past his "warantee". (He's a year older then I am!!!) Its good he is still eating and I suppose as long as you dont move the food and water on him and keep his perches low he will live out the rest of his life the best he can. Best of luck and congratulations on such a long lived "fethered friend"

The lifespan will depend on how you cared for your bird. But just like human beings, no matter how you cared for them, birds do die naturally also. Proper diet and caring play important roles in extending the lifespan of your cockatiel. Proper diet means giving variety of foods such as white millet, sunflower seeds, fresh greens, fruits like banana, cuttle bone, drinking water all the time, vitamins and minerals which are available in any local petshop. Caring means maintaining a close bond between you and your bird, and a cheerful disposition when you approach its cage. Talk, chat, sing and play with it. Life expectancy for cockatiel is 15 - 25 years.

Cockatiels have a life expectancy of about 15 years, but just like any other animal there are some that live much longer than that. It sounds like he's doing well despite his age, which is awesome.
