The secret behind happiness is to know that it neither comes from outside of you nor does it come from your ego/wants/feelings. There is no mythical being outside of you that grants you happiness. If there is a god, then why is the world unhappier than ever? And there is no lasting happiness to be found in the ego, in buying things, in pleasurable sensations.
Happiness is something that you find when you still your mind and find total peace living in this one present moment. At that moment you and the divine are one. No other moment exists. But it isn't a momentary happiness because the same is true of the next moment, and the one after that. Each present moment is the only moment in time when you can choose to still the mind and be at peace.

Seeker,
If you want to be happy, permanently, there are two things you must do. The first, is to seek a personal, loving relationship with God. He wants that very much. Once you have done that, you will have a firm foundation upon which to perform the second part. You must forever shatter the thought that happiness can be derived from anything outside of you. There are no material possessions, human relationships, or situations, which can bring you permanent happiness. All of these things are outside of our control, and so we will forever worry in the back of our minds if we can keep them. True happiness is an idea, or thought. You can use your imagination to visualize perfect happiness, as nothing more than a thought, based upon nothing. No one can take your thoughts from you. Once you have crafted your personal happiness, and practiced at calling it forth whenever you want to experience it, it is yours forever. Just don't make the mistake of ever thinking that something outside of you, no matter how good, can make you happy.

Realizing the following is very true about happiness:
You can either take the good things in life for granted, and bemoan the bad; or you can enjoy the good things and take the bad with dignity. Either way your happiness is entirely up to you. if you decide that you're content with who you are and your life, even if it's not perfect, then you can be happy.
Then again, Dennis Leary also has the right of it: "Nobody's happy. Happiness comes in small doses. It's a cigarette or a chocolate chip cookie or a five-second orgasm. You come, you eat the cookie, you smoke the butt, you go to bed, you get up in the morning and go to f***in' work."

Knowing there is a higher purpose in life. Never leaving on a bad note--always saying "I love you," letting go of past hurts and not looking back with regret, believing that each day when I wake up "This could be the day that something wonderful happens" and if it doesn't, finding a way to do something for someone else (which actually makes the day wonderfu anyway!)

Jesus's willingness to die for me communicates His love for me, and I now have a purpose through that. It might just be me, but as long as I'm without something to be about in life, I'm not happy, but now I have something bigger than me. God bless you
