because there wings wont let them, ( my sons answer), but i would have to say they can fly but only long enough to get ontop of a hen house. or to quickly get away from a predator. but they were not built physically for flight. but they do taste good especially fried. lol

Chickens can fly. I have a friend who has free range chickens of all types, and they roost in the tree branches about 20 feet up at night. Same with turkeys.I know, I was stunned too.

I think it has something to do with their wingstructure.

They can fly for distances no futher than 15-20 feet.

Also, if they are chickens that are bred for eggs or food they're wings are clipped at birth so they cant fly much at all.

They can

BUT only cetain breeds are more likely to fly, and some individuals are more likely.

The world record for longest chicken flight was 303 feet.

All in all chickens just dont feel the need to fly.

They can only fly for short distances, because their bodies are too heavy for the length of their wings to get any amount of lift needed for further distances. Look at other birds and their wing length and body weight to compare the flight distances or lack of flight. Look at the following: ostrich, eagle, vulture, hummingbird, whooping crane, penguin, ducks. Domesticated chickens are also bred for bigger body mass / meat which would further reduce their inability for liftoff for longer distances.

their body mass is too great for their tiny wings to fly. however, free ranged chicken can fly a few yards compared to farm raised chickens.
