hi, growing up i had all kinds of dogs. i had 5 german shepards, cockers, samoyed, mixed breeds, & rescued over 50 dogs (all kinds) and found homes for all but 5, due to illnesses. i love german shepards alto they are large breeds. i even had a wolf shepard mix, one of the best friends i ever had. after he passed away 3 years ago, my 7 year old wanted a dog. she wanted a chihuahua. i read up on the breed. liked alot of what i read. it just so happened that i ran into a lady who had one and had pups for sale.we got one. she is sweet, smart, loves to cuddle. fun to watch, plays great with my daughter. she hardly sheds, eats very little, travels well where ever we go. crate trained her, so when we leave she is comfy in her safe haven. she is not a yippy dog. off all the dogs ive had, it seems i just knew- which was just right for me, or they picked me. a true believer that things happen for a reason. i picked out the chihuahua. she is so perfect for us. we get comments on her where ever we go. my mom said why a chihuahua? youve always had big dogs, and yuck they look like rats! now when our dog comes around her, she spoils her, says she is the cutest dog i ever had. i suggest one of these dogs. do be consistant in training, i lost alot of sleep, she slept with me from day 1. it wasnt cuz she yipped all nite, it was because i was afraid of rolling over on her. they love to be cozy! she has a soft side bed that she sleeps in now on my bed. she is smart because i take time to train her. if someones says their dog is dumb, or cant learn commands, pees on the floor etc... its because the human owner has not taught the dog correctly, there are many new breeds that shed very little. any small to medium breed mixed with poodle will not shed much. poodles are very smart, devoted. maybe a terrier poodle mix, poodle chihuahua mix. poodles are also good with folks with allergies. dander shampoo can help too. go to pet stores, pet round ups held at pet food stores like pet smart they offer all sorts of adoptable dogs and look for dogs with poodle, terrier, chihuahua, mixes. you will know when you find the right dog for you. sometimes they walk right up to you and say take me home. best of luck to you.

Have you conidered a Schnauzer? They come in standard, small, and giant, i think, and i know they don't shed that much, if at all. You might also consider a Chihuahua. THey may look like rats to some but i don't believe the shorthaired variety sheds that much and they don't require a huge yard. My family has had both breeds and they make great pets. Avoid Shetland Sheepdogs and Labrador Retrievers. THey both shed a lot and have a lot of energy. Labs can also get pretty big.

For the shedding and small/medium options, go towards a terrier. You can go to www.akc.com and look under Breeds, theng Groups for Terriers. There are many varieties. MOST don't shed very often and are usually small to medium. Welsh terriers, schnauzers, irish terriers and airedale terriers are great companions and require little maintenance. A brushing once a day and your set. Also, they don't eat much, so kibble or raw diets are cheap. As for allergies, they don't shed very often even when their hair grows "long" Hope it helped.

Portuguese Water Dog. Great personality, hypoallergenic and great with kids. Also, they're a dog's dog, if you know what I mean.
