my older cat, 8 years and my kitten, 1 year; sometimes when they smell things, they stick their tongues out and make a weird face.. what does that mean? just a quirk?

I have to agree, it is pretty cute. =P

I doubt the cat is doing it because it's stupid.
If it was a form of stupidity, I'm sure it could be used to describe half of the male race, thank you. =)

LOL I think they call it "flavin" or "flava" when they do that.

It is when they smell something that is raunchy to them...most often times, it's where the other cat was sitting and it smells the other's bottom there...haha

Nothing to worry about...my mom and I jokingly call it "stink mouth" haha

It's just a way of smelling better. They can get the scent over their scent glands that way to help them identify it. Sometimes it IS making a face at a foul smell -- and it's just too cute, isn't it.
It's all perfectly normal. All cats do it.

in the cat there is an organ in the mouth to smell or something close to that like a more extreme form of sniffing

Great question, my cats do the same thing, but they are taking in more air to get a better evaluation on it. It looks weird, but is very very normal.

"Besides their noses, cats can smell with something called the "Jacobson's organ", located in the upper surface of their mouths. This is what cats are using when they scrunch up their eyes and open their mouths after sniffing something intently! "

my older cat sticks his tongue out when he's hot. are you sure that's not why yours is doing it?

have you got their teeth checked at all?

it could be that one cat has tooth trouble and hence does it and the other may be copying?
