I was an au pair for a year and loved it so much I spent another six years in the country I travelled to. If you choose your family carefully and make sure you negotiate a definite contract of hours from the start there shouldn't be any problems. It's a great way of experiencing different cultures and making new friends, I'm still in contact with many of the friends I made nine years on! If you are from the UK I recommend looking in The Lady magazine for adverts. Good luck and have fun

That depends entirely on the country and family you chose, and on your own behaviour, discipline and expectations.

For good, well educated and well behaved young girls being an au-pair can offer a lot of great opportunities, including learning a language and becoming familiar with the connected culture. But for those who are lazy, sloppy and have attitude problems, it will be better to stay at home.

You have to remember you'll be working for peanuts, and sometimes treated like a servant... but sometimes treated very well.... it can be a good way to experience new countries and cultures...

Well, if you can put up with the kids, it might be worth it.
