As when I served The military is about uniformity . All your clothing even eye glasses are issued . Even your deodorant and tooth brushes had to be the same . Bring some cash to buy personal hygiene products . Every other item was provided for training . You will have time to go to the PX to buy . Other than one or 2 sets of civilian clothes.Do not bring any type of drugs or weapons even a pocket knife you will loose them . Same with cell phone Ipod etc.. You are there for training not club med. As for your under garments they were all provided . Every one wears standard issue . All the way to your undies . It has been a few years for me things may have changed . But the military has done the same things for over 200 years . Contact your recruiter . Your written orders should come with a full set of instructions. Someone needs to tell nick that those liberals he is bashing are mostly what serve in the military . Liberals are patriots also . I wish you the best . Be safe . The training you are to begin will last a lifetime .

It is a little different for females than it is for males. They don't issues females the ugly brown underwear like they do the males. You should bring underwear (lots of them since some of the girls you will be in basic with are disgusting and will steal your dirty underwear). Make sure you bring items to secure your hair if you have long hair. The hair accessories you use either need to be black or the color of your hair. Other than that bring stuff to write letters and toiletry items. You do need to bring some things with you because they do give you an advance on your pay and take you to the shopette to get things you forgot but it may be awhile before this happens. Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks to get through reception before you actually get to basic, especially in the summer because that is the busiest time DO NOT bring civilian clothes or girly stuff like makeup and curling irons and crap like that because as someone said it will be taken away and locked up until graduation and if you bring it you will be lugging your heavy bag with all of that stuff in it around until you get to basic and they lock it up. Good luck. I went through basic at Fort Jackson in Aug of 2000 and I work for Army recruiters now.

I don't know if the Marines are different, but in the Marines, they pretty much give you what you need, or you'll have a chance to buy it; you'll also be so busy you won't have time for much at all for a while. I *would* print out the on-line list and ask your recruiter about it. And about the answers to these questions. Regs can change.
And, finally, Good Luck & God Bless You & Keep You Safe....

Nothing but the clothes on your back. Uncle Sam will give you everthing down to the underwear. All civies get put in a cardboard box and shipped home. Bring a purse, wallet, ID, and orders.

Not sure on the female side. Just take toiletry items, running shoes, and stuff to write letters with. Whatever else you need you will be issues or taken to px to get. Do not worry about money, they advance you some from your first paycheck.

Not true. You should have a list of what you need. If you don't, see your recruiter.
Addition: Print out your online list and show it to your recruiter.

absolutely nothing, your clothes and all your personal items will be taken and locked away until graduation. you will be given all your clothing items, and as far as hygiene items and such, you will be given a card which is an advance on your first 2 weeks of pay to purchase razors, toothbrush, etc etc, at the px while in reception. but you will be allowed to keep NOTHING but your wallet and money (a limited amount of cash, I believe 20 dollars at a time).
